Amazon announced on June 3, 2026 that customers searching in the Amazon Shopping app will now see AI-generated images appear below the search bar as they type, images that shift and refine in real time with each word added, illustrating the product the customer is describing before they have finished describing it.
Customers often know what they want visually but lack the vocabulary to describe it in a way that returns useful search results. Amazon's examples, "cowl neck" for a shirt with a draped collar, "rattan" for furniture with woven side panels, illustrate the gap the feature is designed to close.
A customer who types "shirt with draped collar" will see AI-generated images of cowl neck styles appear as suggestions, can tap the one that matches their vision, and will be directed to real products with similar visual characteristics.
The feature is live in the US for apparel and home categories, with more categories planned over time. The Feature The distinction the feature creates, between the AI-generated image and the actual product , is the most important thing to understand about the announcement.
The images that appear in the search bar are not photographs of real products available on Amazon. They are AI-generated illustrations of what the customer's description might look like. Tapping one does not take the customer to that specific product. It takes them to search results for visually similar real products.
That gap has already drawn skepticism. TechCrunch described it as "somewhat bananas for a retailer to make up fake products as a way of guiding users to search results," noting the obvious question of why Amazon would generate fake product images when its catalog contains millions of real product photographs.
CNET cited early Reddit reactions as skeptical, with users flagging the potential for confusion between the AI illustration and actual purchasable inventory. Amazon is also launching a separate but related feature simultaneously, AI-generated shoppable collages.
When a customer searches for a clothing item, Amazon displays a carousel of AI-generated outfit suggestions featuring that item.
