In a significant announcement, Citi, one of the world’s foremost financial institutions, has appointed Japan Mehta as its Chief Data Officer (CDO). Mehta’s appointment, effective from October 2023, marks a pivotal moment in Citi’s commitment to data-driven transformation and innovation. With a distinguished career spanning various key positions, Mehta is well-prepared to lead Citi’s data strategy into a new era.

Pioneering Citi’s Digital Transformation

Mehta’s most recent role as Global Chief Digital & Technology Officer at Citi Global Wealth from October 2021 to October 2023 showcased his ability to shape and drive Citi’s digital and technological landscape. His leadership in this role resulted in the creation of customer-centric solutions spanning savings, lending, payments, and wealth management across a vast international landscape. Managing technology across 17 countries in the Asia-Pacific and Europe, including international private banking, Mehta laid the foundation for Citi’s digital future.

A History of Innovation

During his three-and-a-half-year tenure as Managing Director – Digital & Mobile at Barclays from 2013 to May 2016, Japan Mehta pioneered remarkable innovations. His focus on digital and mobile evolution, commercialization, and partnerships led to the launch and success of “Barclays Live,” an Investment Banking Mobile App adopted by 80% of top clients within eight months. Mehta also played a key role in creating the next generation of banking through partnerships and developing a Mobile-first Wealth Investment platform. His innovations extended to NFC-based mobile payments, enhancing security for offline transactions.

Driving Digital Evolution

Mehta’s career has been marked by his commitment to digital transformation. As the Managing Director – Head of Digital Business and Commercial Banking at JPMorgan Chase & Co. from 2016 to 2018, he led digital business and commercial banking initiatives. His contributions resulted in a new generation of banking solutions that met the evolving needs of customers.

A Background in Technology and Innovation

In addition to his roles at Citi, JPMorgan Chase & Co., and Barclays, Mehta played a pivotal role at Verizon as an Associate Director and Software Systems Architect. His work at Verizon included leading new product development and integrating over-the-top (OTT) technology into the FiOS TV platform, enhancing customers’ digital experiences.

Educational Background

Mehta’s educational journey includes a Master of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He furthered his knowledge and skills by completing certificate courses in leadership, marketing, and finance at Southern Methodist University.
