AbbVie Partners With Iambic to Accelerate AI-Driven Drug Discovery

AbbVie has entered a multi-year collaboration with clinical-stage life sciences and technology company Iambic to accelerate the discovery and development of small-molecule therapies across immunology, neuroscience and oncology.

Under the agreement, Iambic will apply its AI-driven drug discovery platform to programs with potential to become first-in-class or best-in-class medicines. AbbVie will contribute its therapeutic-area and drug discovery expertise, while Iambic will provide its AI technologies and automated chemistry and biology capabilities.

The financial terms include an upfront payment to Iambic, along with potential success-based milestone payments and tiered royalties on net sales of products generated through the collaboration. The companies did not disclose the value of the upfront payment or potential milestones.

The partnership was announced on 09/21, the same day Iambic unveiled the latest version of its AI model, Enchant v3.

Iambic Brings Enchant v3 Into AbbVie Collaboration

Enchant v3 is a multimodal transformer model that combines biomedical data from across the drug discovery process. Iambic said the model was trained using 41 billion parameters across more than 6,000 molecular properties and 16 biomedical data modalities. It is designed to test multiple drug-design hypotheses in parallel and help researchers evaluate drug properties earlier in the discovery process.

AbbVie said the collaboration will use Enchant v3 alongside Iambic's NeuralPLexer technology. NeuralPLexer is designed to predict protein-ligand complexes, while Enchant focuses on multimodal prediction across drug discovery and development.

In traditional small-molecule discovery, researchers evaluate numerous properties for individual candidates. Iambic's platform is designed to evaluate multiple properties simultaneously, which the companies said could help researchers make more precise decisions about which molecules to pursue.

The approach combines computational prediction with laboratory work. That fits with the industry's increasing use of AI to guide drug discovery while experimental testing remains necessary to validate potential therapies, a dynamic explored in AI drug discovery's changing role in pharmaceutical research.

Jonathon Sedgwick, Senior Vice President and Global Head of Discovery Research at AbbVie, said combining Iambic's platform with AbbVie's drug-hunting expertise could help the company make more precise decisions about the molecules it pursues. The goal, he said, was to design better molecules more efficiently and improve the probability of success.

Iambic Expands Its Pharma Partnerships

The AbbVie agreement adds to a series of pharmaceutical collaborations for Iambic this year.

In June, Bayer entered a collaboration with Iambic focused on small-molecule discovery for hard-to-drug targets. The agreement gives Bayer access to Iambic's Enchant and NeuralPLexer technologies.

In February, Iambic announced a multi-year collaboration with Takeda covering selected high-priority small-molecule programs, initially in oncology and gastrointestinal and inflammation therapeutic areas. Takeda also received access to NeuralPLexer. Iambic said the agreement could generate more than $1.7 billion in success-based payments, in addition to upfront, research-cost and technology-access payments and royalties.

These deals place Iambic among a growing group of AI drug discovery companies forming commercial relationships with large pharmaceutical companies. Recent partnerships have included deals such as Insilico Medicine's agreement with SK Biopharm, which covered AI-driven drug discovery for neurological and neuroimmune diseases.

For AbbVie, the Iambic collaboration adds another AI platform to its existing efforts to apply artificial intelligence across research and development. The company said its AI@AbbVie initiative is being used across R&D, operations and other functions to support scientific innovation and decision-making.
