Adventist Health Launches Epic System With Expanded AI Integration

Adventist Health Launches Epic System With Expanded AI Integration

The health system connected 27 hospitals and more than 440 clinics through one EHR while deploying Epic’s AI tools across its network.

Adventist Health completed the largest technology implementation in its history, connecting 27 hospitals and more than 440 clinics across California, Oregon and Hawaii through a single Epic electronic health record (EHR) system.

The health system said the deployment is designed to give clinicians a unified view of patient information across more than 100 communities. Adventist Health manages more than 5 million patient encounters and 3 million clinic visits each year.

The implementation also includes an expanded deployment of Epic’s artificial intelligence capabilities. Adventist Health said it was the first U.S. health system to go live with this level of Epic AI integration in a single implementation, using more of the platform’s AI-powered tools at launch than any U.S. health system previously had.

The claim was made by Adventist Health and was not independently quantified in the announcement.

Epic AI Moves Into Clinical Workflows

The AI deployment is focused in part on reducing documentation and administrative work for clinicians. Adventist Health said AI would support caregivers while leaving decisions about patient care with human clinicians.

That approach follows a broader move by health systems to embed AI within existing EHR workflows. Providence has expanded its use of Epic-native AI tools, including applications for clinical documentation summaries, coding assistance and reporting.

Sutter Health has also integrated AI directly into Epic, allowing physicians to access clinical evidence through natural-language queries within the EHR.

Epic has continued expanding its own AI capabilities across clinical workflows. Its recent deployments include Chart with Art for nursing documentation at Mount Sinai Medical Center and AI-supported Ergo Visit at Ochsner Health.

Adventist Health President and CEO Kerry L. Heinrich said the unified record would allow patient information to follow people across different care settings while AI handles some of the technology-enabled workload.

“When a patient’s full story lives in one place, we can care for them more safely and with deeper compassion,” Heinrich said.

The health system also said patients would be able to connect with their care teams through a single MyChart account.

Unified Record Connects Care Across 100 Communities

The Epic implementation is intended to give care teams access to the same patient record as people move between clinics, hospitals and home-based care. Adventist Health said this could support continuity and coordination by making relevant information available across its network.

The patient-facing system also brings appointments, communications and other health information into a single MyChart account.

The emphasis on reducing administrative work comes as healthcare organizations increasingly deploy AI documentation tools. AI scribes are moving into wider healthcare use, with health systems using them to reduce the time clinicians spend documenting encounters.

Adventist Health marked the transition with a dedication service involving more than 38,000 associates, providers and volunteers. The event recognized the years of preparation behind the implementation and reflected the organization's faith-based approach to healthcare.

Sam Leonor, Chief Mission Officer of Adventist Health, said the organization viewed the new technology as another tool supporting its longstanding healthcare mission.

The health system said the implementation required preparation from clinicians, providers, associates, Super Users and support teams across its network.

For Adventist Health, the Epic rollout represents a change in how clinical information and technology are connected across its system, while the organization continues to position human caregivers as responsible for patient care decisions.
