Philips Names Shez Partovi Chief AI Officer, Laura Matz Technology Chief

Philips appointed Shez Partovi as its first Chief AI Officer and named Laura Matz Chief Innovation and Technology Officer, creating separate executive roles for artificial intelligence and the company’s broader technology and innovation agenda.

The appointments take effect September 15, according to Philips CEO Roy Jakobs, who announced the changes on LinkedIn. Partovi will remain on Philips’ Executive Committee and continue as Business Leader of Enterprise Informatics, while Matz will join the Executive Committee.

Jakobs said Partovi would guide Philips’ transformation into a “people-led, AI-powered company.” Matz will lead the company’s enterprise innovation and technology agenda, with responsibility for helping its businesses scale through design, engineering and technology capabilities and platforms.

Partovi Takes Enterprise-Wide AI Role

Partovi has led Philips’ Enterprise Informatics business since October 2022. Before that, he served as Chief Innovation and Strategy Officer, and his background includes healthcare delivery, digital transformation and enterprise technology.

The new role gives him an enterprise-wide mandate covering both the use of AI in Philips’ healthcare products and its application within the company. That expands the scope of an AI strategy that Philips has already embedded across imaging, informatics and clinical workflows.

Philips currently lists AI-enabled applications across CT, MRI, ultrasound, image management and other areas of its healthcare portfolio. Its AI Manager, for example, provides a platform for orchestrating AI applications within radiology workflows, while its imaging systems use AI for tasks including image reconstruction, patient positioning and automated measurements. 

The company has also continued expanding AI-enabled clinical technology. Its work on robotic stroke care, for example, illustrates how AI is becoming part of Philips’ broader healthcare technology strategy.

Philips’ 2026 Future Health Index found that 65% of clinicians surveyed had increased their use of workplace AI tools. The company reported that 46% of clinicians reported annual time savings of at least 132 hours, while 50% said AI gave them more capacity to see patients. 

Matz Takes Technology and Innovation Brief

Matz joins Philips from Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, where she became Chief Science and Technology Officer in 2021. Merck said at the time that the role would support its science and technology-led growth strategy. 

Her background spans science, technology, electronics, life sciences and digital transformation. She also founded Athinia, a data collaboration platform focused on the semiconductor ecosystem, and previously held leadership roles in electronics and specialty materials businesses.

At Philips, Matz will oversee the broader enterprise innovation and technology agenda while Partovi focuses specifically on AI. The division gives Philips dedicated executive leadership for AI alongside a separate mandate covering the wider technology infrastructure and innovation pipeline.

The appointments come as Philips continues moving AI into established clinical workflows rather than treating it as a standalone technology. The company has described AI applications across diagnostic imaging and workflow management, including systems designed to place AI-generated insights directly into clinicians’ existing work environments. 

The shift also reflects the growing focus on using healthcare AI to improve operational capacity alongside clinical applications. AI's role in expanding patient capacity has become an increasingly important part of the healthcare technology discussion. 

Jakobs said the appointments would strengthen Philips’ Executive Committee as the company pursued profitable growth, while sharpening its focus on creating value through innovation and AI.
