Happen CEO Scott Sanborn said on the company's Q3 2026 earnings call on October 28, 2026 that AI tools helped the lender support 26% higher loan volume during the quarter with 20% lower operations headcount.
Sanborn said that at last year's efficiency levels, the operations team would have needed more than 200 additional employees to process the current volume, framing the figure as a measure of scale rather than a headcount forecast.
The quarter was the first full quarter Happen operated as Happen Bank, following a rebrand four months before the call. The company holds $11.5 billion in deposits, 89% of them FDIC-insured.
Where AI Is Working Inside the Bank
The largest operational change is in member service. Penny, Happen's AI member service agent, resolves 30% more calls than the company's legacy system, which Sanborn said means faster responses and higher satisfaction.
Quality assurance on member support calls is now automated with 100% coverage, which management said speeds up how quickly the company learns to improve the experience.
Happen also launched its first data analytics agent in operations. It gives staff natural-language, real-time insight into about 90% of the metrics they regularly review, and the company plans to extend it across the organization.
In technology, coding agents have increased pull requests per technology employee by 21%. The company is testing autonomous coding agents with a human kept in the loop, and is also testing AI agents in fraud prevention, where identity and fraud checks work together in layered defenses to reduce manual hours and turnaround times.
Sanborn said AI usage across the company roughly doubled between July and September, yet total AI spending fell over the same period. Management attributed this to matching each job with the right tool instead of defaulting to the most expensive option.
Efficiency, Headcount, and Growth
CFO Andrew LaBenne said compensation expense rose 6% year over year against 26% growth in originations, which he said reflects the impact of the company's automation, efficiency, and AI initiatives. Compensation expense was $64.5 million.

He noted that part of the year-over-year increase reflects a change in accounting, and that some growth staffing, particularly for the home equity line of credit team and home improvement support, will add expense.
Asked by Citizens analyst David Scharf about efficiency, Sanborn said the company is aiming to do more with the same people, and that departing staff are sometimes not replaced because AI can "cover the gap." He added that expanding into home equity lending will still require hiring experienced staff.
Preparing for Outside AI Agents
Sanborn said AI agents are coming to banking and that Happen expects to benefit once questions around consumer trust, permissions, and liability are resolved.
Internally, the company has put infrastructure, training, controls, and governance in place to give staff connectivity to internal tools and data that is "model agnostic" and cost-controlled.
AI-enhanced fraud and collections capabilities also feed into Happen's underwriting, which draws on always-on data sources, hundreds of proprietary variables, and thousands of engineered credit bureau features. The company makes hundreds of underwriting policy changes a year.
On the product side, HappenConnect, the company's embedded financing platform, has reduced partner onboarding time by 60%.
Loan issuance through the mobile app doubled year over year, and borrowers who also held a deposit account or used the Debt IQ monitoring tool were two to three times more likely to return for future products than loan-only customers.
Happen reported Q3 2026 pretax income of $76.8 million, up 34%, and diluted EPS of $0.50, up 35% and above its guidance range.
Originations rose 26% to $3.34 billion, and risk-adjusted revenue rose 27% to $279 million. The company raised its full-year EPS guidance to $1.87 to $1.92 and expects full-year originations of $12.3 billion to $12.4 billion.
