Visa CEO Ryan McInerney said on the company's fiscal Q4 2026 earnings call on October 27, 2026 that the quarter marked "a bit of a tipping point on users being able to experience" agentic transactions.
He said adoption is still very early in terms of the number of consumers using it, and that it represents a very small amount of Visa's business. "It is clear that agentic commerce is here, and Visa's role is clear: delivering trust," McInerney said.
Asked by KBW analyst Sanjay Sakhrani about the pace of adoption following the launch of consumer agents including Meta's Muse, McInerney said agentic activity will remain very small relative to the size of Visa's business over the next four quarters.
Building the Trust Layer for Agents
McInerney said trust is the biggest barrier to scaling agentic commerce. Responding to UBS analyst Timothy Chiodo, he said Visa is working with issuers, acquirers, and other participants to enable agentic transactions at scale through Visa Intelligent Commerce, which covers user identity, agent registration, intent capture, and dispute resolution.
Trust for the agent itself is handled through Visa's Trusted Agent Protocol and Agent Directory. Visa has nearly 50 AI partners live and in production on the platform, including Shopify's Shop Pay, and McInerney said that number is expected to double in the coming months.
Dozens of partners are using Visa Intelligent Commerce, he said, with many dozens more engaged. Visa is also collaborating with Anthropic to bring Anthropic's commerce blueprints to Visa's merchant network.
On the business side, McInerney said Ramp's agentic bill pay is now generally available, and Airwallex is testing credentials enabled by Visa Intelligent Commerce.
In a pilot with BILL and Billtrust, BILL's payment agent is using Visa Intelligent Commerce to pay invoices, while Billtrust's supplier portal identifies the agent and accepts payment.

Asked by Morgan Stanley analyst James Faucette whether agentic volume would be incremental or migrated from existing channels, McInerney pointed to opportunities including Visa Direct, machine-to-machine payments, and the command-line interface as a commerce interface, as well as whether agents end up making more purchases across more seller locations.
How Visa Is Using AI Internally
McInerney said Visa has moved its product development onto an agentic toolchain. More than 60% of the company's global product development and engineering teams have adopted the new way of working, with a target of 100% this year.
As an example, he said the enablement of the Visa Stablecoin Platform for OUSD was designed, built, and shipped in seven weeks with 12 people.
Visa delivered more than 350 product releases during the year, up 25% from the year before, which McInerney attributed in part to increased use of AI across the business.
On security, McInerney said Visa built a Visa Vulnerability Agentic Harness to test and strengthen its own defenses, and then open-sourced it. He said clients have identified AI and cybersecurity as two of their top three focus areas, alongside stablecoins advisory.
CFO Chris Suh said cross-border e-commerce growth in the quarter was driven primarily by retail, including spending on AI platforms.
Visa reported fiscal Q4 2026 net revenue of $12.1 billion, up 13% year over year, and EPS of $3.48, up 17%. For the full fiscal year, net revenue reached a record $46 billion, up 15%, and EPS was $13.27, up 16%. Value-added services revenue grew 30% to $14 billion in constant dollars.
For fiscal 2027, Visa guided to low double-digit net revenue growth and low double-digit to low-teens EPS growth, with value-added services expected to grow in the low-to-mid 20s. The company did not disclose agent-initiated transaction volumes or quantify AI's contribution to its outlook.
