Wells Fargo Hires BBVA's Enterprise AI Lead to Run AI and Data for Consumer Banking.

Wells Fargo announced on October 15, 2026 that Cayetano Gea-Carrasco will join the company as head of AI and Data for Consumer Banking and Lending.

He will report to Saul Van Beurden, who serves as both head of Enterprise AI and co-CEO of Consumer Banking and Lending, and will be based in San Francisco.

The role covers the full lifecycle of AI use cases within the division. Gea-Carrasco will be responsible for simplifying the data environment and accelerating the responsible delivery of AI for Consumer Banking and Lending. He will also work with Wells Fargo's Enterprise AI team to scale solutions across the wider company.

"Customers do not think about channels. They expect us to know them, make banking easier, and be there when they need us," Van Beurden said. "Cayetano understands how strong data and disciplined execution turn AI into better customer experiences. His track record will help us move faster while keeping safety and sound risk management front and center."

Gea-Carrasco joins from BBVA, where he led the bank's enterprise AI transformation and its global data and analytics organization. Before BBVA, he spent 15 years at Moody's in senior roles spanning software, data, and analytics.

"Wells Fargo's scale and depth of customer relationships create a powerful opportunity to put AI to work," Gea-Carrasco said. "I'm joining to make everyday banking simpler for our customers and deliver measurable business outcomes, with the controls and accountability our customers expect."

The appointment follows Wells Fargo's Q3 2026 earnings call on October 13, where CEO Charlie Scharf said the bank had risen to #5 globally and #3 in the U.S. on the Evident AI Index.

Scharf described AI deployments across code writing, branches, marketing campaigns, and cybersecurity, and said the bank had launched an AI-powered tool for its financial advisers.

Wells Fargo has approximately $2.3 trillion in assets and operates through four reportable segments: Consumer Banking and Lending, Commercial Banking, Corporate and Investment Banking, and Wealth and Investment Management.
