Adobe's CEO Search Took Six Months and Ended With an Internal Hire

"I've had the privilege to work alongside Anil the last few years and I leave confident in where he'll take Adobe."
Adobe announced its next CEO on September 3, 2026. Anil Chakravarthy will become President and CEO effective December 1, succeeding Shantanu Narayen who announced in March he would step down after 18 years at the helm.
The Chakravarthy appointment is an internal hire. He currently leads Adobe's Customer Experience Orchestration and Worldwide Field Operations and joined the company approximately seven years ago from Informatica, where he served as CEO. Narayen will move to Executive Chair and work closely with Chakravarthy through the transition.
On the same day, David Wadhwani announced he would leave Adobe. Wadhwani has led Adobe's Creativity and Productivity business, the division that houses Photoshop, Premiere, and Illustrator, for nearly five years.
CNBC had previously reported he was seen as a strong contender for the CEO role, in part because of his central role in Adobe's $20 billion bid to acquire Figma, which was ultimately abandoned in December 2023 due to regulatory hurdles.
Wadhwani said in a LinkedIn post he has company ideas he plans to explore and described the moment as "the right time to start a new chapter."
"I've had the privilege to work alongside Anil the last few years and I leave confident in where he'll take Adobe," Wadhwani wrote.
The Search That Ended With an Internal Hire
When Adobe announced in March that Narayen would step down, the company said it would consider both internal and external candidates. The six-month search concluded with an internal appointment.
"If this was Plan A, what took so long?" KeyBanc Capital Markets analyst Jackson Ader wrote. "The awkward implication here is that this wasn't Plan A or maybe even Plan B and the Company had a hard time attracting the kind of outside talent befitting a company of Adobe's stature."
William Blair analyst Arjun Bhatia offered a different reading of the same outcome. "The decision to go internal shows Adobe values continuity in leadership and is confident in its current strategy and vision," Bhatia wrote.
Adobe shares fell 6.1% on September 4 to $268.36. The stock is down 23% year-to-date, compared with a 13% gain for the S&P 500.
Adobe specifically faces the risk of AI-native creative tools reducing the switching costs that have historically made its Creative Cloud subscription base durable.
Chakravarthy's Profile and the AI Mandate
Chakravarthy's background is in enterprise data management and customer experience. He joined Adobe in 2019 after serving as CEO of Informatica, a company that builds data integration and management infrastructure for enterprise clients.
Before Informatica, he held executive roles at Symantec, VeriSign, and McKinsey and Company, and holds a Bachelor of Technology in Computer Science from IIT Varanasi and a Masters and PhD from MIT. His connection to Adobe came through the company's partnership with Informatica and his relationship with Narayen.
His current role overseeing Customer Experience Orchestration positions him most directly in Adobe's enterprise marketing technology business, the segment that competes with Salesforce, SAP, and Oracle in the market for large-scale customer data and campaign management platforms.
Under his leadership, Adobe developed category-defining products including Adobe CX Enterprise, GenStudio, and Brand Visibility, all of which use AI to deliver customer experiences, and he championed the acquisitions and integration of Workfront and Semrush. That business has been growing and is less directly exposed to the AI creative tools disruption narrative that has weighed on Adobe's stock.
"I could not be more confident that Anil is the right person to lead Adobe's growth in an AI-driven era and look forward to working closely with him in my new role as executive chair," Narayen said.
Adobe has released several AI-powered updates to its creative products including Firefly, its generative AI image model, and AI features embedded across Photoshop, Premiere, and Acrobat, and has argued that its deep integration into existing enterprise and creative workflows gives it a structural advantage over newer AI-native competitors.
Frank Calderoni, Lead Independent Director of Adobe, led the special committee that oversaw the selection process, and described the result as a "rigorous selection process resulting in the appointment of an outstanding CEO."
The December start date means Narayen will lead Adobe's Q3 FY2026 earnings call on September 10 and the company's MAX creative conference in October, leaving Chakravarthy to begin his tenure at the start of fiscal 2027.
