A robot’s movements may be repetitive, but getting them right has depended heavily on an engineer’s experience. At HD Hyundai Robotics, troubleshooting has involved watching machines on-site and repeatedly adjusting their work sequences and movement paths.

The company is bringing AI agents into that process, with engineers reviewing the changes they suggest. Since introducing agents developed with Palantir in August, HD Hyundai Robotics said average resolution time for robot-related problems fell from 21.5 days to 7.9 days, a reduction of about 63%.

HD Hyundai Robotics Chief Technology Officer Ahn Seong-hwan presented the results at Palantir’s Sovereignty Bootcamp in New York. The company recently disclosed the progress, alongside plans to expand its physical AI business.

“We plan to identify ways to address challenges on the ground more quickly and effectively,” Ahn said, according to The Korea Herald.

Bringing Agents Into Robot Programming

The collaboration combines AI and simulation with engineers’ expertise. Agents analyze existing robot programs and propose improvements, giving engineers recommendations to review and refine using their knowledge of conditions in the field.

Previously, reliance on individual engineers’ experience made the programming process difficult to standardize. The new workflow gives AI a role in identifying possible changes while keeping engineers responsible for evaluating them.

The company also expects programming costs to fall by more than 50%. That remains a target, separate from the reduction already reported in resolution time.

Expanding the Engineer’s Role

HD Hyundai Robotics plans to train field engineers to identify operational problems and implement AI-based solutions. Their responsibilities would extend beyond programming, installation and commissioning.

The training plans put engineers’ understanding of factory operations at the center of the expansion. Their role includes defining the problem the AI needs to help solve, as well as evaluating its proposed solution.

Senior executives from both companies will hold regular steering committee meetings to prioritize projects and identify further applications with measurable results.

A Partnership Extending Across HD Hyundai

The robotics work sits within a relationship that began with HD Hyundai Oilbank in 2021. In an announcement earlier this year, Palantir and HD Hyundai expanded their partnership to bring Foundry and the Artificial Intelligence Platform (AIP) to more businesses across the group.

The companies cited existing applications in refinery operations and predictive maintenance. The expanded agreement extends into robotics and electric systems, with plans for a Center of Excellence to help employees use Foundry and AIP.

The focus on operational workflows also featured in Palantir’s third-quarter earnings call. “The fundamental unit of the enterprise is the workflow,” Chief Technology Officer Shyam Sankar said, arguing that improvements in individual workers’ productivity do not necessarily produce a return on investment.

“All the value comes from the elegant integration of AI, software and humans,” Sankar said.

Palantir’s quarterly results showed growing commercial demand: US commercial revenue rose 148% year over year to $984 million, surpassing US government revenue for the first time.

For HD Hyundai Robotics, the reported result is more specific: engineers are resolving robot-related problems in fewer days. Its next financial target is to translate the programming changes into lower costs.
