Salesforce’s Next Data Bet Is Waii

The Waii acquisition is part of a series of AI-focused deals by Salesforce in 2025.

On August 7, Salesforce announced it had signed a definitive agreement to acquire Waii, an enterprise-grade natural language–to–SQL platform. Waii’s software converts plain-language business questions into production-ready SQL queries. The company plans to integrate Waii into Data Cloud and make it a component for Agentforce and Tableau Next once the transaction closes in Salesforce’s third fiscal quarter of 2026, subject to customary closing conditions.

Salesforce says the acquisition targets a persistent issue in enterprise data access: the value of organizational data is often locked behind technical and semantic complexity. Business users typically rely on technical teams to translate their questions into database queries, which can delay decision-making.

Waii’s approach centers on building a dynamic metadata knowledge graph of an enterprise’s data environment. This graph includes database schemas, relationships between tables and columns, definitions of business metrics, and governance rules. Using this context, Waii’s system generates accurate SQL queries that adhere to the enterprise’s data structure and compliance requirements.

The platform also includes a dialect-aware SQL compiler that adapts to different database systems, built-in query optimization for improved performance, and enterprise-grade integration capabilities. Salesforce says these capabilities will be applied to support “language-driven exploration” across its platform, enabling queries based on intent and context.

Once integrated, Waii will be wired directly into Data Cloud, support agentic workflows in Agentforce, and serve as the foundation for Tableau’s next-generation semantic engine, underpinned by a live metadata knowledge graph. “The future of business isn’t about having the most data; it’s about making that data speak a common language,” said Raveendrnathan Loganathan, EVP of Salesforce Data Cloud. “With Waii, we’re not just augmenting our stack; we’re acquiring the catalyst that makes this vision a reality for our customers.”

Gunther Hagleitner, Waii’s co-founder and CEO, described the company’s metadata knowledge graph as “a unified semantic layer” that enables users and AI agents “to communicate with any data source while removing technical barriers to critical insights.”

Waii’s founding team brings technical experience in data infrastructure and knowledge graph systems. Hagleitner has held senior roles in data infrastructure, while CTO Wangda Tan previously led SQL at Snowflake and engineering at Cloudera and Hortonworks. The company describes its platform as an API-first text-to-SQL engine powered by its knowledge graph and is backed by First Round Capital and angel investors.

The Waii acquisition is part of a series of AI-focused deals by Salesforce in 2025. In May, Salesforce acquired London-based Convergence.ai, a company developing adaptive systems capable of navigating web and application interfaces. The acquisition closed on June 11, and its technology is now used in Agentforce for task execution.

On July 31, one week before announcing the Waii deal, Salesforce signed an agreement to acquire Bluebirds, an AI-powered prospecting platform that helps sales teams identify and engage high-potential leads using lead intelligence and data enrichment. Salesforce plans to integrate Bluebirds into Sales Cloud and Agentforce to automate top-of-funnel sales processes. “Every sales team wants to spend less time on busywork and more time closing deals,” said Kris Billmaier, EVP and GM of Sales Cloud. The Bluebirds transaction is also expected to close in Salesforce’s third fiscal quarter of 2026.

In late May, Salesforce announced a $8 billion agreement to acquire Informatica, a provider of data integration, governance, and master data management solutions. That deal is expected to close in early fiscal 2027.

Salesforce says Waii’s integration will reduce the need for manual SQL query requests, shorten the time from question to answer, and enable broader access to data while maintaining governance and security standards. Loganathan said the company’s goal is “to empower every employee, from the boardroom to the frontline, to have a trusted conversation with their data.” Hagleitner said joining Salesforce would allow Waii to extend its capabilities “to millions of users” and support “the next era of trusted, intelligent systems.”

Waii’s acquisition is expected to close in Salesforce’s third fiscal quarter of 2026. Bluebirds has the same closing timeline, Convergence.ai has already closed, and Informatica is projected to close in early fiscal 2027.
