Boston Dynamics Opens Georgia Facility to Train Atlas Humanoid Robots

Boston Dynamics has opened a facility inside Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) in Georgia to train its Atlas humanoid robots for automotive manufacturing, bringing the robots closer to commercial deployment on factory floors.

The Robotics Metaplant Application Center (RMAC), located outside Savannah, will serve as a testbed for Atlas in real manufacturing environments. The robots are initially being trained to handle logistics and sequence automotive parts before they are delivered for assembly, Boston Dynamics said. 

The facility is part of Hyundai Motor Group's wider strategy to develop, train and deploy physical AI systems across its manufacturing operations. Hyundai has previously outlined a phased plan for Atlas, beginning with parts sequencing before expanding into more complex manufacturing tasks.

Hyundai plans to begin full-scale Atlas deployment at HMGMA in 2028, according to its latest robotics strategy. The company expects the robots to expand to Kia AutoLand Georgia in 2029 and eventually other production facilities. 

From Training Center to Production Lines

The RMAC gives Boston Dynamics a controlled environment for training Atlas before the robots move into production operations. Hyundai has described the facility as a place to simulate real operating conditions, collect real-world data and conduct testing and verification before robots reach production lines. 

The company has also been building the production infrastructure needed to scale its robotics business. Hyundai announced in January that it was targeting a production system capable of manufacturing 30,000 robots annually by 2028. Its strategy calls for Atlas to begin with parts sequencing in 2028 and expand to component assembly by 2030. 

That manufacturing strategy has been developing alongside Hyundai's plans for Atlas production and deployment. 

Boston Dynamics unveiled the production version of Atlas at CES 2026 and began manufacturing the robot at its Boston headquarters. The company said all Atlas deployments for 2026 had already been committed, with robots scheduled for Hyundai's RMAC and Google DeepMind. 

The company has also partnered with Google DeepMind to integrate Gemini Robotics foundation models with Atlas. The partnership is focused on enabling humanoid robots to perform a wider range of industrial tasks, beginning with automotive applications. 

Automakers Expand Humanoid Robot Programs

Hyundai's plans place Boston Dynamics in a growing group of automakers experimenting with humanoid robots inside manufacturing operations.

Toyota has outlined its own plans to use humanoid robots across its factories, while BMW has expanded its deployment of Figure AI's humanoid robots at its U.S. manufacturing operations. 

For Boston Dynamics, the Georgia facility also expands the role of Atlas beyond demonstrations. The company's stated approach is to validate individual manufacturing processes before expanding deployment across production sites. Hyundai has identified 16 core manufacturing processes for initial Atlas applications, with the scope expected to grow as the robots are validated. 

The RMAC is also expected to expand. Boston Dynamics said it plans to move its operations into a facility roughly 10 times larger in 2027, while expanding Atlas training to additional industrial sectors including aerospace, semiconductors, logistics, food and beverage, and life sciences. 

The company is simultaneously expanding its Massachusetts footprint, with plans for a 323,000-square-foot facility in Waltham that will support manufacturing, artificial intelligence, workforce training and research and development for its robotics portfolio.

For now, the Georgia center represents the next testing stage for Atlas as Hyundai moves from demonstrations and training toward deployment in an operating automotive plant.
