Best Buy Beat Expectations and Disclosed Three AI Initiatives in the Same Quarter

"Ask Blue is live. ChatGPT sells Best Buy products. AI glasses more than doubled."

Best Buy launched Ask Blue as their first named conversational AI shopping assistant on August 27, bringing together product knowledge, support resources, customer reviews, availability, and pricing into a single interface on Best Buy's website.

The tool can compare products across specifications, assess compatibility between devices, provide support information, and direct customers to self-service options or live support as the query requires., according to the company

The Ask Blue launch arrived alongside a completed commerce integration with OpenAI that allows customers to discover Best Buy products, receive AI-generated recommendations, and complete purchases inside ChatGPT. Incoming CEO Jason Bonfig described both as part of Best Buy's agentic AI strategy.

"It brings together expertise from across Best Buy's website in one easy-to-use experience," Bonfig said of Ask Blue. "It combines product knowledge, support, resources, customer reviews, availability and pricing to help customers make informed decisions."

The ChatGPT integration is one of two major AI platform partnerships Best Buy has active simultaneously. Best Buy is also one of more than 20 partners endorsing Google's Universal Commerce Protocol, launched at NRF 2026, which enables customers to make purchases directly in Google AI Mode while using Google Search and the Gemini app.

Together the two partnerships give Best Buy a presence in the two largest AI shopping channels currently available to consumers. Outgoing CEO Corie Barry confirmed at Q4 2026 earnings that Best Buy has been deliberately evolving bestbuy.com to be more agentic friendly, a discoverability investment that precedes the Q2 AI product launches and provides the technical foundation they depend on.

AI Glasses and the Emerging Categories Contribution

Best Buy also reported that a group of emerging categories including AI glasses, trading cards, and health rings more than doubled from a year earlier in Q2 and contributed approximately one percentage point to comparable sales.

The company did not break out AI glasses individually from the other two emerging categories, but it is the first time AI glasses have been named in a Best Buy earnings disclosure as a meaningful sales driver.

Best Buy carries the full Meta AI glasses lineup, including Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 and Oakley Meta Vanguard, across its major market locations, positioning it as one of the primary physical retail destinations for hands-on AI glasses evaluation and purchase.

Meta reports its Ray-Ban line is the best-selling AI eyewear in the world, with EssilorLuxottica, Meta's manufacturing and distribution partner, having more than tripled Meta AI glasses sales in 2025.

Google and Samsung also previewed Android XR audio glasses co-designed with Warby Parker and Gentle Monster at Google I/O 2026, scheduled to launch in fall 2026. Given Best Buy's existing Google Universal Commerce Protocol partnership, the company is positioned to carry the next wave of AI glasses hardware as the category expands beyond Meta's current lineup.

The emerging categories disclosure also sits alongside a computing segment that delivered its 10th consecutive quarter of positive comparable sales, driven in part by enterprise and education customers upgrading hardware to AI-capable devices, according to the company.

Best Buy reported that Business sales rose 21% year over year in Q2 and the B2B segment now generates more than $1.1 billion in annual revenue, growing at 15%-20% in the first half of fiscal 2027.

Computing average selling prices increased in the mid-teens during Q2 while unit sales declined in the high single digits, a pattern Bonfig attributed to industry-wide increases in memory costs.

Best Buy said it is working with vendors to maintain product choices at key price points and is using trade-ins, financing, and promotions to manage the cost impact for customers. Computing growth is expected to slow in the second half as the company cycles two strong prior-year quarters.

Marketplace, Advertising and the Financial Context

Best Buy's marketplace and advertising operations continued to expand alongside the AI product disclosures, according to the company. Best Buy Ads is on track to grow 10% this year after generating $900 million in collections last year.

The US marketplace reached approximately $300 million in gross merchandise value during Q2, with full-year GMV expectations raised to $1.3 billion. The company plans to begin adding international marketplace sellers later in the quarter.

Domestic gross profit rate expanded 60 basis points to 24%, benefiting from marketplace and advertising growth alongside $34 million in tariff refunds.

Home theater was the second-largest weighted comparable sales contributor, domestic TV sales grew more than 10% year over year, with the exclusive national launch of RGB television technology cited as a driver.

Mobile phones delivered a sixth consecutive quarter of growth. Major appliances posted slight sales growth supported by next-day delivery availability now offered in nearly all metro locations.

Best Buy raised its full-year comparable sales guidance to 1.9%-3% from the previous range, its adjusted operating income rate guidance to 4.4%-4.5%, and its adjusted EPS guidance to $6.70-$6.90.

Third-quarter comparable sales are expected to grow 1%-3%, with August month-to-date comparable sales running at the high end of that range. Bonfig assumes the CEO role on November 1, with Anne Bramman joining as CFO.
