FedEx expanded its deployment of Dexterity's physical AI trailer loading system at its Hagerstown Hub, moving beyond pilot operations into larger-scale production.

FedEx Corp. has expanded its deployment of Dexterity Inc.'s physical AI-powered trailer loading systems at its Hagerstown Hub in Maryland, extending a multi-year collaboration that the companies say has progressed from pilot validation to larger-scale production deployment. 

The announcement, made on July 30, marks another step in FedEx's effort to automate one of the most physically demanding operations in its parcel network while evaluating how AI-powered robotics can be integrated into broader hub operations.

Moving Beyond Pilot Deployment

The Hagerstown deployment expands a program previously used to validate the technology at a pilot site. According to FedEx, the production rollout will continue focusing on safety, operational consistency, and performance while operating at a significantly larger scale.

Trailer loading remains one of the most challenging workflows in parcel logistics because workers must continuously load packages of different sizes and weights while maximizing trailer capacity and maintaining load stability. FedEx said tens of thousands of trailers are loaded daily across its U.S. network, making the process difficult to automate using conventional robotic systems.

The deployment uses Dexterity's Foresight world model, which combines vision, depth sensing, and touch to make real-time decisions in changing warehouse environments. The AI platform powers Dexterity's dual-armed Mech robot, designed to load trailers while optimizing package placement for space utilization, stability, and loading speed.

FedEx also said the project evaluates how physical AI interacts with operational functions beyond trailer loading, including destination planning, trailer assignment, maintenance, and workforce processes. The deployment reflects a broader shift toward AI systems capable of performing physical industrial work rather than supporting only software-based tasks. Similar enterprise AI deployments across industrial environments continue to expand as organizations explore automation beyond digital workflows.
