DocuSign Says Its AI Platform Is Cheaper to Run Than External LLMs

"Point solutions and standalone AI tools cannot address the breadth of this challenge securely the way DocuSign IAM can."

DocuSign's IAM platform is growing faster than the company's headline revenue, according to their Q2 FY2027 earnings call on September 4.

CEO Allan Thygesen confirmed that IAM's AI-native architecture processes workloads at significantly lower marginal costs than offerings that route to external LLMs. That cost efficiency is what allowed DocuSign to meaningfully increase the volume of documents ingested through IAM in Q2 while maintaining the 81.7% non-GAAP gross margins that characterized the quarter, according to the company.

Customers have now ingested more than 300 million documents through IAM's Agreement Manager, a repository that gives DocuSign's AI models training depth across a heterogeneous, private dataset of agreements that no external LLM has access to.

"Point solutions and standalone AI tools cannot address the breadth of this challenge securely and at scale the way DocuSign IAM can," Thygesen said. "IAM is uniquely able to aggregate, analyze, and unlock the value of an organization's agreement data to improve business decisioning."

IAM's share of total ARR rose from 12.6% in Q1 to 15.1% in Q2, a nearly 2.5 percentage point increase in a single quarter. DocuSign raised its full-year guidance to expect IAM representing 18%-19% of total ARR exiting Q4 FY2027, implying continued acceleration in the second half.

The Agentic Suite and the MCP Expansion

DocuSign launched five distinct agentic AI capabilities in August 2026, extending IAM from agreement management into autonomous agreement execution. The AI Assistant handles contract analysis and redlining and can trigger agentic workflows automatically.

Pre-built agents address two of the most common agreement use cases, document intake and vendor renewal. Agent Studio allows customers to build, govern, and deploy custom agents for specialized tasks including compliance auditing, business playbook execution, and vendor pricing evaluation. Agents are also now embedded directly in IAM's workflow builder for end-to-end agreement management without switching interfaces.

In user testing, according to the company, the AI Assistant cuts the time required to summarize, review, and finalize agreements including NDAs in half. AI-powered web forms allow users to transform static documents into interactive, shareable forms, unlocking the data embedded in hundreds of millions of legacy documents across document-intensive industries including financial services, government, and healthcare.

The platform's distribution architecture is expanding at the same time. DocuSign's MCP server, positioned as "the agreement layer for agentic enterprise" — goes generally available at the end of September 2026. Cumulative active MCP accounts more than quadrupled during Q2. The server already connects DocuSign to Anthropic, Gemini, OpenAI, Microsoft Copilot, Slack, and Perplexity, and will be open to any agent when it goes GA at month-end.

Named enterprise deployments from Q2 demonstrate the commercial breadth of the platform. Salesforce is deploying IAM as a trusted system of record for agreements, turning agreement data into actionable business signals.

Oppenheimer is using IAM to streamline advisor onboarding and build AI-powered workflows. HydroCorp reduced contract preparation time from two to three hours to 20 minutes using IAM integrated with Salesforce. SailPoint deployed IAM to accelerate sales contract processing and improve visibility into the business.

The Financial Context

DocuSign reported Q2 FY2027 revenue of $875.7 million, up 9% year over year, beating the high end of its guidance. Non-GAAP diluted EPS of $1.16 beat the $1.08 analyst estimate by $0.08. Non-GAAP operating margin expanded 180 basis points to 31.6%.

Free cash flow reached $296 million, a 34% margin, up more than 35% year over year. The company repurchased $307 million of stock in the quarter, reducing diluted share count 8% year over year to 193 million.

Dollar net retention improved to 103% from 102% in the prior quarter, with expansion from IAM contributing a larger share of the improvement than in prior quarters.

Customers spending more than $300,000 in annual contract value grew 14% year over year to nearly 1,300, the second consecutive quarter of double-digit growth in that cohort. DocuSign raised its full-year ARR growth guidance to 8.5%-9.0% from 8.0% in fiscal 2026.
