Figma Cut Its AI Tool Pricing by 50% to Drive Volume

Figma Cut Its AI Tool Pricing by 50% to Drive Volume

Figma is prioritizing volume over near-term margin.

Figma cut the price of Figma Make credits by approximately 50% in some cases, and CEO Dylan Field was direct about why at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference on September 8.

"We did the gut check, invariant of customer feedback, and went, this feels a bit too high, and it's most important to get the usage of the system and the volume growing," Field said. Usage rose after the reduction. Field declined to disclose specific figures but confirmed the direction.

Figma is prioritizing volume over near-term margin, betting that falling frontier model token costs will improve the economics over time while usage scales, according to the company.

The same trade-off underlies Figma's broader AI product strategy. Field described Code Layers, announced at Config and not yet launched, as the same concept as Figma Make in a different environment.

Where Figma Make creates applications from a prompt, Code Layers places working code directly on the canvas next to design elements, allowing teams to prototype, design, and view code simultaneously in one environment. Field said Code Layers generated strong customer demand before launch. "Everyone saw that and went, 'I want it now,'" he said.

Field's central argument at the conference was that the canvas is the durable interface for product creation work. External coding agents are increasingly writing changes back to Figma rather than operating independently, which Field described as commercial validation of that thesis. The View Figma tool call, which enables that write-back, is growing quarter over quarter, according to the company.

Figma Agent is being designed to extend the same multiplayer technology that allows multiple humans to collaborate on a single canvas to AI agents, bringing agents and designers into the same environment simultaneously. Field named speed, cost, and quality as the three goals for the agent and acknowledged the company is still working toward all three.

On competitive positioning, Field said frontier model progress on design remains incremental. Visual quality, UX details, design-system adherence, and hallucination are all unresolved, and the hallucination problem in particular requires positive and negative training examples from customers rather than written guidelines alone.

"Strict adherence to these guidelines is not a given," Field said. "It's an easy thing to say and a harder thing to actually make happen." Figma's gross margin for the next six months is uncertain. Field said usage and monetization patterns for Code Layers and Figma Make are still developing and hard to predict.
