Yum Brands is expanding the use of AI in its drive-throughs. On the company's Q3 2026 earnings call on November 3, 2026, CFO Ranjith Roy said more than 900 Taco Bell restaurants now use voice AI to take drive-through orders, and that the team expects to expand it to more than 1,500 restaurants by year-end.
Roy said restaurants using the system have seen a 6% improvement in overall drive-through satisfaction and an approximately 1.5% sales uplift driven by higher checks.
He also cited sustained improvements in team member retention compared with a control group. "Our AI pipeline is focused on shifting from AI testing to adoption and then to scaling impact," Roy said.
Byte in the Kitchen
Voice AI is one part of Byte by Yum, the company's proprietary technology platform for its restaurants. Roy said Byte is "creating better consumer experiences, simplifying operations," and providing greater value to franchise partners.
The latest addition is a Byte kitchen display system, part of Yum's Smart Ops bundle. In the limited portion of the US system where it is deployed ahead of a broader rollout, Roy said it has delivered 8% faster drive-through speeds, a 12% reduction in refunds, and a more than 20-second reduction in delivery driver wait times.
CEO Chris Turner said reaching the full potential of Byte and Yum's digital capabilities is the third priority in the company's strategy. At KFC, he said the company will scale loyalty and Byte to accelerate the brand's modernization.
From Drive-Throughs to the Back Office
Asked by J.P. Morgan analyst John Ivankoe about AI's role in general and administrative costs and productivity, Roy said "we do expect AI to be transformative to the business." He said AI usage is about 40% up across the enterprise, without specifying the period or measure.

Roy described upcoming developments in Byte Coach, a tool intended to help general managers and regional leaders identify and fix restaurant-level issues when paired with AI. Yum is also using AI to send personalized messages to consumers at scale, he said.
Melius Research analyst Jacob Aiken-Phillips asked about the franchisee economics of voice AI and Byte.
Roy described drive-through voice AI as one of many AI initiatives across Yum, and said the team is already working on loyalty integrations, multi-language support and multi-lane drive-through support for the system.
The Quarter
Yum reported Q3 2026 adjusted EPS of $1.56 and revenue of $2.05 billion. The company completed its divestiture of Pizza Hut in early September, recording a pre-tax gain of about $1.7 billion and about $2.4 billion in net proceeds.
Excluding Pizza Hut, system sales rose 3% excluding foreign currency, units grew 7%, and core operating profit rose 1%, or 6% year to date. Yum opened 955 gross new restaurants in the quarter, including 878 KFC units.
KFC same-store sales rose 1% globally, with KFC International excluding China up 4%. Taco Bell same-store sales fell 4%, with US sales down 4% and international up 5%. The company said Taco Bell US same-store sales are up about 1% quarter to date.
Yum expects 2026 to be a record year for new unit development, with unit growth above its 5% long-term target excluding Pizza Hut.
