Shutterstock Is Turning Its Content Library Into an AI Creative Platform

"In an AI-powered world, real-world customers are solving creative problems."

Shutterstock announced on June 11, 2026 that it is evolving its content library into a human-led AI-powered creative platform, combining licensed human-made content with embedded AI editing and generation capabilities in a single workflow.

According to the press release, generative image tools have always carried the same tension. Speed and creative flexibility on one side, commercial safety, authenticity, and contributor compensation on the other.

Shutterstock is making an explicit bet that the market for professionally produced, commercially deployable creative work requires both, and that the companies that have tried to deliver AI speed without human content foundations have left a gap.

"In an AI-powered world, real-world customers are solving creative problems," said Paul Teall, VP of Marketplace Strategy at Shutterstock. "Our updated platform lets creatives get inspired by premium human-made content and then use integrated AI tools to adapt, refine, and personalize it for their needs."

What the Platform Delivers

The platform is built on Shutterstock's existing library of authentic, licensable content created by contributors globally, according to the press release.

Users start from that foundation, discovering existing assets through conversational natural language search, and then adapt, refine, and extend them using embedded AI tools.

According to the press release, AI-powered image and video generation allows users to transform near-complete assets into exactly what a project requires rather than generating from a blank prompt.

The most operationally specific feature is Model Match, Shutterstock's proprietary technology that automatically connects a user's prompt to the AI model best suited for that specific creative task.

As the number of available AI models has multiplied, selecting the right one for each task has become a workflow friction point. Model Match removes that decision from the user entirely, reducing the cognitive overhead of AI-assisted creative production, according to the press release.

Workflow features include content reference and first frame reference tools that allow users to build from existing assets, maintain visual consistency across a project, and guide AI outputs toward a specific aesthetic rather than starting from scratch each time.

A Shutterstock app is now available in ChatGPT, extending the platform's licensed content library directly into the AI interface that most creative teams already use for research and drafting.

The Contributor Economics

Contributors whose content is edited using AI tools and subsequently licensed through the platform continue earning royalties, according to the press release.

That means a photographer whose image is used as the starting point for an AI-refined campaign asset receives compensation when that asset is licensed, the same way they would if the image had been used unmodified.

"Businesses do not need disconnected AI tools. They need creative systems that work together," Teall said. "By combining trusted content, leading AI models, and human expertise in one platform, Shutterstock helps customers create faster, scale confidently, and produce work that is ready for the real world."

Commercial licensing includes indemnification backed by human review for AI-generated content, covering the legal and compliance dimension that enterprise marketing and creative teams require before deploying AI-assisted work in public campaigns.
