Oura Named Its First CIO and First SVP of AI Engineering

Oura added two senior technology executives on August 20, creating two roles the company has not previously had, as it moves to scale the AI infrastructure behind its health-tracking ring ahead of a confidential IPO filing.

Sanjay Chandra becomes Oura's first Chief Information Officer, focused on building the data architecture and governance layer that underpins the company's AI health models. His prior experience at Lucid Motors is directly relevant, five years overseeing IT across design, manufacturing, supply chain, and logistics at a data-intensive hardware company.

 "With Lucid, you collect so much intelligent information from the car. And now here we are collecting information about the health of a member and leveraging that. There's a lot of resemblances," Chandra said.

Han Chiu becomes Oura's first SVP of AI and Software Engineering, leading the development and training of agents, AI models, and algorithms that surface personalized health insights in the Oura app. 

Chiu joins from Click Therapeutics, where he led the company's AI transformation as CTO. His mandate at Oura includes a specific governance dimension, ensuring that the company's commitment to safety and security guardrails develops alongside its product ambitions rather than as a constraint on them.

The company is building specialized AI models for distinct health domains rather than deploying a single general-purpose model across all use cases, a direction already demonstrated by a recently launched women's health AI model trained on peer-reviewed medical literature vetted by Oura's board-certified clinicians and women's health experts.

That model provides individualized guidance on conditions including cycle irregularity and perimenopause symptoms, a narrower and more clinically grounded approach than the general wellness advice available through consumer AI tools. 

Hale described plans to extend the same approach to additional health subpopulations, with domain-specific models as the intended architecture rather than a single general model applied across all use cases.

"Our vision is that we want domain expert models, not some cloud model trained on Reddit, making health decisions about you," Hale told the WSJ.

The two new roles are designed to support that architecture from both directions, Chandra building the data and governance infrastructure required to operate AI responsibly in a regulated health context, and Chiu leading the model development that sits on top of it. 

Oura gathers health data including heart rate, sleep patterns, and activity levels, using them to develop personalized predictions in areas including impending illness detection.
