BlackBerry just launched Work Smart Tools—an AI suite that summarizes, proofreads, adjusts tone, and rewrites emails entirely on-device, with zero cloud processing. In an era when every enterprise AI deployment raises data sovereignty questions, BlackBerry is making a bet that on-device intelligence is the answer.
The Technical Architecture
This isn’t vaporware. BlackBerry’s approach uses platform-native AI models: Apple Foundation Models on iOS (iPhone 15 or later) and Google Gemini Nano on Android. All AI inference occurs locally on the device—no email content, metadata, or AI suggestions are transmitted externally. The system works fully offline, including in airplane mode and air-gapped environments.
What It Actually Does
The feature set targets email productivity specifically: instant email summaries that distill lengthy threads in seconds, intelligent proofreading for grammar and clarity, adaptive tone adjustment (formal to friendly with a single tap), and clarity enhancement for maximum message impact. These aren’t revolutionary capabilities individually—what’s notable is executing them entirely on-device without cloud dependencies.
