Summa Health is adding artificial intelligence tools for medical imaging, specialist referrals, supply ordering and other healthcare operations as part of a transformation plan backed by General Catalyst’s Health Assurance Transformation Company (HATCo).
The Akron, Ohio-based health system and HATCo announced the technology partnerships on August 19. The companies involved include Aidoc, Clarium, Commure, Fabric, Hippocratic AI, Judi Health, Transcarent and Verse Medical. General Catalyst is an investor in each of the eight companies, according to Summa Health and HATCo.
The technologies cover different parts of the health system. Aidoc's AI is being used for diagnostic imaging, while Clarium focuses on healthcare supply-chain management. Commure provides AI tools for clinical documentation, referrals and revenue-cycle workflows, and Fabric works on patient access, triage and scheduling.
Hippocratic AI provides healthcare-focused AI agents for patient engagement and care workflows. Judi Health focuses on care navigation, while Transcarent provides AI-supported benefits navigation and healthcare guidance. Verse Medical works on durable medical equipment and post-acute care workflows.
The deployment is part of a wider expansion of AI beyond individual clinical applications. OSF HealthCare's expansion of RapidAI across 18 hospitals, for example, shows how health systems are using AI to support medical imaging and time-sensitive care.
Summa and HATCo said the technologies are intended to make day-to-day operations more efficient and create a more connected patient experience.
HATCo Is Building A Technology Stack Around Summa
The technology rollout is part of HATCo's larger plan for Summa following its acquisition of the health system in October 2025. HATCo is a subsidiary of General Catalyst focused on transforming healthcare organizations.
Summa's transaction materials said HATCo committed $350 million in capital over five years, along with another $200 million for strategic and transformative investments over seven years. The companies have positioned Summa as a testing ground for technology and operating changes that could inform HATCo's broader healthcare strategy.
The new technology stack is also designed to connect individual applications. Percepta, another General Catalyst-backed company, is working on a "Health System Command Center" intended to integrate the technologies across Summa's operations, according to the announcement.
That approach puts AI in several layers of the healthcare system at once, from interpreting scans to coordinating referrals and managing supplies. It also follows other efforts to move AI deeper into clinical workflows, including Mayo Clinic's partnership with Microsoft to develop a healthcare-specific frontier AI model.
Summa had already been using AI before the latest expansion. The health system has used AI-assisted technology to identify potentially cancerous lung nodules and machine learning to monitor patients for signs of sepsis, according to Summa.
The new partnerships broaden that footprint into administrative and operational functions around patient care. Rather than relying on a single AI system, Summa is deploying specialized technologies across different parts of its operations while HATCo works to connect them through a common technology infrastructure.
The rollout gives HATCo an opportunity to assess how multiple AI and healthcare technology companies perform inside a large health system and whether integrating those tools can improve efficiency and patient access at scale.
