The RealReal launched Ask TRR to all 45 million members on October 8, 2026, making its AI shopping agent, built with Google Cloud's Gemini Enterprise, broadly available after a pilot program.
This launch is the company's most significant step yet toward replacing keyword search with conversational discovery across its luxury resale marketplace, according to the press release.
The case for an AI agent at The RealReal is structurally different from standard retail. The platform lists more than 1.5 million unique items daily, each available as a single unit.
Once a piece sells, it is gone. Traditional keyword search works well when a retailer carries multiple units of the same product across time.
It works poorly when a shopper knows they want a certain silhouette or era but cannot name the exact designer, and the item they are looking for may sell before the right search term surfaces it.
Ask TRR allows shoppers to describe what they are looking for in natural language and receive tailored recommendations built around intent rather than keywords.
The agent is built on Gemini Enterprise for Customer Experience and draws on 15 years of proprietary platform data and more than 50 million items previously sold on The RealReal to generate those recommendations, according to the press release.
"Ask TRR builds on that advantage, enabling precision and specificity whether you start with a designer name, an occasion, or simply an idea," said Rati Sahi Levesque, president and CEO of The RealReal. Darshan Kantak, VP of Product for Applied AI at Google Cloud, described the direction as AI that goes beyond answering questions toward "understanding people."
The RealReal said it plans to extend the capability to product description pages, adding contextual AI recommendations at the point where a shopper is actively considering a purchase, the step closest to conversion.
For most retailers, AI-driven discovery is a convenience. For The RealReal, it is closer to a time constraint โ every item is a single unit, and inventory turns over daily. A shopper who finds the right piece and waits has no guarantee it will still be there.
