AI Search Is Costco's Best Traffic Source

"Traffic to our site from AI search grew triple digits for the second consecutive quarter."
On September 29, Costco CFO Gary Millerchip disclosed during their Q4 2026 earnings call that AI search traffic grew triple digits for the second consecutive quarter, and it now converts at a higher rate than every other traffic source Costco tracks. Costco has also never spent a dollar on digital advertising.
"While starting from a low base relative to other channels, AI continues to grow in its influence on how our members are searching for products," Millerchip said. "Traffic to our site from AI search grew triple digits for the second consecutive quarter and continues to show the highest conversion rate of all site traffic."
AI-referred traffic converting at a higher rate than paid search, email, direct, and social suggests that consumers using AI agents and AI search tools to find products are arriving at Costco with higher purchase intent than any channel Costco has historically measured.
The category profile is consistent with Costco's overall e-commerce performance, and AI search-originated sales are led by appliances and consumer electronics. The Costco membership itself is also appearing among the top items originated from AI searches.
Millerchip described it as evidence of "strong positive sentiment around the value of our membership coming from these sources," suggesting that AI platforms are organically surfacing the membership value proposition alongside product recommendations.
"We don't do any paid digital advertising. AI presents an opportunity in a sort of neutral environment for us to be able to ensure that our value and our quality shows up transparently for our members," said Millerchip.
For most retailers, AI search discoverability is a paid media problem, getting products into AI recommendations requires either paid placement, advertising partnerships, or heavy investment in content optimization, according to the company.
For Costco, the combination of a curated assortment, buyer-vetted quality reviews, and a brand with strong organic reputation means its products are surfacing in AI results without paid intervention. That structural advantage is what the conversion data reflects.
Costco is not treating the AI channel as passive. Millerchip disclosed that the company's technology teams are actively working with Gemini, Anthropic, and OpenAI to clean up and update product data and pages so that Costco's value continues to show up accurately in AI search results.
When an analyst asked about agentic commerce positioning, Millerchip pushed back gently on the framing. He described the current moment as AI being used as a search tool rather than an agentic purchasing agent, and positioned Costco's curated assortment and buyer-vetted quality as the competitive advantage in that environment.
"We know that because we have a curated assortment and our buyers are personally vetting every item that we sell, the quality of those items and the reviews that members are going to see around the quality of the products that they're searching for should also be very strong," said Millerchip.
