Workday Raises FY2027 Outlook as AI Drives More Than 25% of New ACV

Workday reported 13% revenue growth in Q2 and raised its FY2027 outlook as AI adoption expanded across more than 5,500 customers.

Workday reported strong fiscal second-quarter results on August 27, with AI products accounting for more than 25% of new annual contract value (ACV) during the quarter as the company expanded its agentic AI portfolio.

The enterprise software company reported total revenue of $2.649 billion for the quarter ended 07/31, up 12.8% year over year. Subscription revenue reached $2.471 billion, an increase of 13.9%.

Workday also raised its fiscal 2027 subscription revenue outlook to $9.940 billion to $9.950 billion, representing 13% growth. It increased its full-year non-GAAP operating margin guidance to 31%, compared with its previous outlook.

Aneel Bhusri, Co-Founder, CEO, and Chair, Workday, said more than 5,500 customers were using at least one of the company's organic AI agents at the end of the quarter, up more than 35% from the previous quarter. He also said AI products generated more than $100 million in new ACV during Q2.

Bhusri returned to the CEO role in February as Workday began fiscal 2027 and placed AI at the center of its product strategy.

AI Adoption Expands Across Workday's Platform

Workday said AI products generated nearly $600 million in annual recurring revenue (ARR), more than triple the amount from a year earlier. Gerrit Kazmaier, President of Product and Technology, said AI ARR increased more than 20% from the previous quarter.

The company reported more than 30 million candidates interacted with its Talent Acquisition Agent during the quarter, while the system automatically scheduled more than 8 million interviews. More than 100 customers also moved Sana Self-Service Agent into production during July.

Workday said Adaptive Decision Intelligence, its AI capability for planning and analysis, entered general availability on 07/31. The product allows users to analyze planning data, model scenarios and submit governed plan updates for approval. The company said 170 customers had purchased it as of the earnings call.

The product builds on Workday's earlier push to bring planning analysis into a governed environment. Workday's Adaptive Decision Intelligence product was introduced in May.

Workday also said Workday Learning, powered by Sana, became generally available during the quarter. The combined product includes AI-based course generation, an AI tutor and other learning capabilities.

Workday Targets AI Growth While Expanding Margins

The company is also expanding the infrastructure around its agents. Developer Agent allows developers to create applications and agents using natural language, while Agent Passport provides security teams with a record of an agent's testing and monitoring.

Workday said more than 3,000 custom applications and agents had been built since its June DevCon event. Its Data Cloud strategy is also designed to let customers use Workday data alongside information held in other systems without copying or moving the data.

The company said more than half of its net new wins in Q2 included at least one AI solution. It also said more than half of its customer base had migrated to its Universal Main Subscription Agreement, which provides access to its AI capabilities and agents.

Workday ended the quarter with $3.403 billion in cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities. It repurchased approximately 9.8 million shares for $1.3 billion during the quarter and authorized an additional $4 billion open-ended share repurchase program.

For the third quarter, Workday expects subscription revenue of approximately $2.515 billion and a non-GAAP operating margin of 30%. The company expects fiscal 2027 free cash flow of $3.18 billion and said it expects non-GAAP operating margin to expand by at least two percentage points in fiscal 2028.
