Dominion Energy announced on July 20, 2026 the appointment of John Russell as its new chief AI and digital officer. The US utility said the move comes as it continues to experience record demand from data centers across its footprint.
According to the company, Russell is an internal hire, who moved into the role from his previous position as vice president and chief technology officer, which he had held since April 2025. Before joining Dominion Energy, Russell worked in leadership roles at defense firms Northrop Grumman and Leidos, the utility said.
Reflecting on the appointment, Russell wrote on LinkedIn that the energy industry is at the intersection of unprecedented technological advancement and growing customer expectations. "Data, artificial intelligence, automation, and emerging technologies are rapidly reshaping how we operate, serve our customers, enhance reliability, and prepare for the future," Russell wrote.

The Bigger Prospect
The move highlights the growing importance of AI and digital technology as utilities manage increasing infrastructure demands. The company's data center pipeline, combined with its recent merger with NextEra Energy, positions the utility to address rising power needs across its service territories in the coming years.
Dominion Energy primarily supplies electricity to parts of Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. It is the main energy supplier for Northern Virginia, which the company said has the highest concentration of data centers in the world.
As of spring 2026, the utility said it has more than 51GW of contracted data center capacity in its pipeline. Dominion Energy was recently acquired by NextEra Energy for approximately $67 billion, a deal the companies said created the world's largest electrical utility company.
Following the acquisition, the companies said their combined data center pipeline totals around 130GW.
