SCAN Names Aman Bhandari Chief AI Officer to Scale AI Across Operations

SCAN appoints Aman Bhandari as its first Chief AI Officer to lead enterprise AI strategy and expand deployments across operations and care delivery.

SCAN Group appointed Aman Bhandari as its first Chief AI Officer, creating a new role to lead enterprise artificial intelligence (AI) and data analytics strategy across the organization, the company said in a press release.

Bhandari most recently served as Vice President of Data Science at Vertex Pharmaceuticals and previously helped build the first data science team at Merck. He also held roles at the White House and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), where he worked on health data and technology policy, according to the company.

The company said Bhandari will focus on scaling AI deployments across operations and care delivery as SCAN expands its use of automation and analytics tools.

SCAN has introduced AI tools across parts of its business, including call summarization, Interactive Voice Response (IVR), and systems that summarize medical charts to support care transitions, the company said.

Bhandari will report to Lindsay Crawley Herbert, Chief People and Transformation Officer, placing the AI function within the company’s People and Transformation organization, according to the announcement.

“The challenge with AI isn’t implementing the technology-it’s marrying the complexity of the technology with how the workforce adopts and uses it effectively and ethically,” Crawley Herbert said in the press release.

SCAN CEO Sachin H. Jain said the company is building infrastructure to support long-term AI deployment across the organization. “We have some very strong players in this space, but I think some of what was missing, frankly, was a mature corporate perspective on how all the pieces should fit together,” Jain said in an interview with Fierce Healthcare.

The appointment follows a period of membership growth for SCAN. The insurer added 127,000 members during the latest Medicare Advantage enrollment period, Fierce Healthcare reported.

“We’re living through a moment where AI is both overhyped and underdelivered,” Bhandari wrote in a LinkedIn post.

“That gap isn’t a technology problem. It’s a leadership and people problem,” he wrote.
