Modular Raises $250M to Break Nvidia’s AI Chip Monopoly

What we're focused on is not like pushing down Nvidia or crushing them. It's more about enabling a level playing field so that other people can compete

AI startup Modular secured $250 million in a funding round that raised its total external capital to $380 million and placed its valuation at $1.6 billion.

Founded in 2022 by software architects Chris Lattner and Tim Davis, Modular is building a software platform designed to allow AI developers to run applications efficiently across different chip architectures without needing to rewrite code for each individual hardware platform.

Chris Lattner, Modular’s CEO and co-founder, is known for his work on the LLVM compiler infrastructure at Apple. He and co-founder Tim Davis, who has a background in large-scale cloud infrastructure from Google, envisioned a platform that abstracts the complexities of AI hardware to enable flexibility across GPUs, CPUs, ASICs, and custom silicon.

Lattner explained, “What we're focused on is not like pushing down Nvidia or crushing them. It's more about enabling a level playing field so that other people can compete”
