AMD Is Acquiring a Physical AI Research Lab for $8.2 Billion

"Building the compute platforms for the next generation of AI requires a deep understanding of how models are evolving."
AMD announced on September 28, 2026 that it will acquire World Labs, the AI research lab founded by Dr. Fei-Fei Li, in an all-stock deal valued at approximately $8.2 billion. World Labs develops spatial intelligence models that generate, reconstruct, and simulate interactive 3D environments, as well as technology for robotic learning and simulation.
Following close, Li will join AMD as Executive Vice President and Chief Scientist, reporting to Chair and CEO Dr. Lisa Su, according to the press release.
World Labs' technology enables AI systems to understand and reason about the physical world, generating and simulating 3D environments from text, image, and video inputs rather than operating purely in language or 2D image domains.
Applications span robotics, simulation, design, and what AMD describes as physical AI, systems that interact with and operate in real-world environments.
"Building the compute platforms for the next generation of AI requires a deep understanding of how models are evolving," said Dr. Lisa Su. "Fei-Fei and the World Labs team bring exceptional research leadership and model expertise. Together, we can use that insight to develop the hardware, software and systems that will power the next generation of AI."
The acquisition builds on a working relationship that predates the announcement. World Labs raised $1 billion in a funding round earlier in 2026, with AMD participating as an investor. The two teams had already been collaborating on model training and inference optimization on AMD GPUs.
"We began a deep technical partnership with AMD last year," Li wrote on LinkedIn. "As our teams worked together, we realized it would be a natural fit to bring together our AI ecosystem of software and hardware, foundation models, and applications."
AMD named three specific AI categories including reasoning, robotics, and simulation, as the domains where compute infrastructure demands are becoming more diverse and where World Labs' spatial intelligence expertise is most directly applicable.
Physical AI requires different compute characteristics than language model inference. Higher spatial resolution, more complex simulation workloads, and tighter integration between model training and real-world sensor data.
Dr. Fei-Fei Li, known for leading the ImageNet project that catalyzed the deep learning revolution in computer vision and for co-directing the Stanford Human-Centered AI Institute, will join AMD as Executive Vice President and Chief Scientist, reporting to Su.
The appointment gives AMD a researcher whose career has shaped the trajectory of AI development at one of the most critical junctures in the hardware market.AMD described the acquisition as advancing its strategy to deliver AI infrastructure for an open ecosystem.
The all-stock transaction structure means World Labs' team and investors become AMD shareholders, aligning their incentives directly with AMD's long-term performance in a market where the physical AI category the acquisition is betting on is still in its early commercial stages.
