Microsoft, Databricks Extend Partnership to Deepen Enterprise AI Integration

Microsoft and Databricks expanded their strategic partnership through the 2030s, adding deeper Azure integration, AI governance capabilities, and enterprise data context.

Microsoft and Databricks announced on July 23 that they have expanded their decade-long strategic partnership into the 2030s, with Databricks committing to run its core business operations on Azure Databricks while both companies deepen integration across Microsoft's AI and productivity ecosystem.

The agreement extends beyond infrastructure. It combines Azure Databricks, Microsoft 365, Teams, Copilot, Power BI, Microsoft Purview, Microsoft Entra, and Microsoft Fabric with Databricks' Data and AI Platform, including Genie, Genie Ontology, and Unity AI Gateway, to help enterprises build AI applications grounded in their own business data rather than standalone foundation models.

The companies said the expanded collaboration is designed to address challenges enterprises continue to face in connecting AI systems to trusted business knowledge while maintaining governance, security, and cost control.

Databricks Co-Founder and CEO Ali Ghodsi said the deeper integration would allow enterprises to unify their data and business knowledge while deploying AI agents and models with governance and cost controls. Microsoft Commercial Business CEO Judson Althoff said organizations increasingly need AI systems that can turn proprietary enterprise knowledge into actionable intelligence.

Databricks Expands Its Commitment to Azure

As part of the agreement, Databricks will migrate its own core business operations and analytics onto Azure Databricks, making the platform central to its internal operations as well as its customer offering.

The company is also expanding its use of Microsoft's Arm-based Azure Cobalt infrastructure. Databricks currently uses Azure Cobalt 100 processors and plans to adopt Cobalt 200, which Microsoft says delivers up to 50% higher performance while enabling memory encryption by default.

The announcement also points to Microsoft's continued investment in custom AI infrastructure alongside its broader Azure strategy. Reuters reported that the partnership includes increased adoption of Microsoft's in-house chips as the companies strengthen their long-term cloud relationship.

The announcement builds on Databricks' enterprise AI roadmap around Genie, Agent Bricks, and Lakebase, which has also featured in recent enterprise partnerships such as its collaboration with Accenture to scale enterprise AI deployments. 

Enterprise AI Focus Shifts Toward Business Context

A key theme of the expanded partnership is bringing enterprise business context directly into AI workflows instead of relying solely on general-purpose models.

Microsoft said Databricks Genie and Unity AI Gateway will become more deeply integrated across Microsoft services, including Microsoft 365, Teams, Power Platform, Microsoft OneLake, Power BI, Microsoft Purview, Azure Data Lake Storage, Microsoft Entra, and Microsoft Foundry. The integrations are intended to let organizations build AI systems that operate on governed enterprise data while maintaining security and operational oversight.

The strategy aligns with Databricks' broader focus on connecting AI with enterprise knowledge. The company has previously argued that enterprise AI depends as much on trusted organizational data as on advances in foundation models. 

The expanded partnership also supports Microsoft's effort to embed AI more deeply into enterprise workflows. That broader strategy includes initiatives aimed at accelerating production AI deployments across customers rather than limiting adoption to pilot projects.

Microsoft and Databricks said thousands of organizations, including Banco Bradesco, Electrolux, SMBC, Unilever, and the Cincinnati Reds, already use Azure Databricks to support analytics and AI workloads. The companies said the expanded partnership is intended to give those customers greater performance, governance, and operational scale as enterprise AI adoption continues to grow.
