HSBC Just Created a Chief AI Officer Role for Its Legal Function

"Meaningful AI transformation happens when deep domain expertise is paired with enterprise capability and leadership focus."
HSBC announced on August 11 that Jessica Escalera has been appointed as the bank's first Chief AI Officer for Legal, a newly created role that places AI transformation leadership inside the Legal function itself rather than managing it from the enterprise AI organization.
Escalera joined HSBC in 2024 as Head of Legal Operations for the Americas after a decade at Barclays, where she established the eDiscovery team, stood up the Legal Chief Data Office, and ultimately led the firm's Data, Technology and Practice Management function.
The appointment comes after HSBC Legal’s initial rollout of AI tools and capabilities. The team has deployed Harvey for individual lawyer use, established governance frameworks and expanded AI capabilities across the function.
Escalera describes that phase as creating the conditions for what comes next, and what comes next is described as categorically different in ambition.
"Implementing Harvey demonstrated how generative AI can augment the work of individual lawyers," Escalera wrote on LinkedIn. "The next phase is fundamentally different. It is about reimagining and simplifying end-to-end legal workflows around the outcomes that matter most to our customers."
Phase one, deploying Harvey, was about making individual lawyers faster and more capable at the tasks they already perform.
Phase two is about redesigning the workflows those tasks sit inside, organizing them around customer outcomes rather than legal process steps, and bringing AI, data, and process design into the workflow architecture rather than applying AI to the existing architecture from above, according to the company.
That distinction mirrors the pattern documented across enterprise AI more broadly this year — the gap between organizations that have deployed AI tools and organizations that have redesigned the workflows those tools sit within.
The Contentstack 2026 Agentic Enterprise Report found that 90% of enterprise leaders who have deployed agentic AI said if they were starting over, they would prioritize workflow and data infrastructure above any other investment. HSBC Legal appears to be making that transition deliberately.
The role bridges two organizational structures, Legal and the enterprise AI organization led by Group Chief AI Officer David Rice. Legal AI transformation at HSBC will be driven by someone with legal domain expertise who also has direct access to the enterprise AI infrastructure rather than by either function working independently, according to the company.
"Meaningful AI transformation happens when deep domain expertise is paired with enterprise capability and leadership focus," Escalera wrote.
