Accenture Invested in a Platform That Maps How Work Actually Happens

Accenture's Pulse of Change survey found that 82% of C-suite leaders are increasing AI investment in 2026. Only 23% say it is delivering widespread sustained business value, down from 32% earlier in the year. The investment in Within, announced on September 23, 2026, is a direct response to the gap between those two numbers.

The reason AI fails to scale across most enterprise deployments is documented. The processes that AI agents are asked to automate are not the processes that actually run the business, according to the press release. 

Official process documentation describes how work is supposed to happen. What employees actually do is rarely written down anywhere. AI deployed on the official process fails because the official process is not what the organization is actually running.

According to the press release, Within's platform captures what the official documentation misses. It tracks how employees work across all applications in real time and records the undocumented interactions that shape how work actually flows. 

That information is compiled continuously into the Work Brain: a live context layer that AI agents can draw on when executing tasks rather than working from process maps that do not reflect operational reality.

"One of the most persistent challenges in AI transformation is that organizations often don't have a clear picture of the starting point," said Jason Dess, Accenture's Industry and Process Reinvention Lead. "Without that understanding, it's difficult to scale AI beyond isolated use cases."

Blackbaud, a software company serving the social impact sector, is the named customer in the announcement. EVP and Chief Commercial Officer David Benjamin described what Within surfaced as the difference between the process on the diagram and the process that was actually running.

"You can't reinvent what you can't see," Benjamin said. "Accenture and Within gave us that visibility, and the plan to act on it."

The architecture Within uses to capture that process data is a private, sovereign model, designed specifically so that the operational intelligence it generates stays within the client's own infrastructure rather than flowing through shared cloud environments. 

That design makes it deployable in regulated industries including financial services, healthcare, and government, where process data is sensitive and standard SaaS data handling is not acceptable.
