S&P Global Expands Microsoft 365 Copilot With Proprietary Market Data

S&P Global is expanding its Microsoft collaboration to bring proprietary financial and energy intelligence into Microsoft 365 Copilot workflows.

S&P Global is expanding its collaboration with Microsoft to bring its proprietary data, insights and analytics directly into Microsoft 365 Copilot, giving financial and energy professionals access to company research, financial analysis and other intelligence workflows without leaving Microsoft’s productivity environment.

The agreement, announced on August 12, extends an existing integration of S&P Global Energy AI Ready Data with Microsoft 365 Copilot. The expanded collaboration adds broader S&P Global content to Copilot in Excel and agentic experiences in Copilot Cowork, according to S&P Global.

The integration is enabled by S&P Global’s AI Data Portal and its Deterministic Retrieval solution, also known as the Kensho LLM-ready API. The company said the system allows Microsoft 365 Copilot and related experiences to retrieve S&P Global content with cited and verifiable results.

Microsoft describes Copilot Cowork as an environment that can carry out tasks across Microsoft 365, while plugins can add specialized skills and connectors to external data sources. Microsoft’s documentation lists S&P Global Energy among the partner plugins available for Cowork.

S&P Global Brings Data Into Existing AI Workflows

The expanded integration is designed around workflows that already take place in Microsoft 365. Users will be able to apply S&P Global intelligence to company research, financial analysis, transcript intelligence, peer benchmarking and competitive analysis, the company said.

In Excel, users will be able to query S&P Global data, compare entities and generate analysis within the spreadsheet environment. The company also said its data can be incorporated into multi-step Copilot workflows while retaining source attribution.

The approach builds on S&P Global’s recent push to make proprietary financial data accessible to AI systems. Its AI Data Portal and retrieval capabilities now include both Deterministic Retrieval and Adaptive Retrieval, which S&P Global introduced in July for different types of AI and agentic workflows.

Deterministic Retrieval is intended for structured, focused data requests, while Adaptive Retrieval allows AI agents and large language models (LLMs) to assemble licensed S&P Global data using natural-language queries. Both are available through the AI Data Portal.

Sally Moore, Chief Client Officer and Co-Head of Market Intelligence at S&P Global, said the Microsoft collaboration was intended to embed the company’s data directly into the workflows customers already use.

Bill Borden, Corporate Vice President, Worldwide Financial Services at Microsoft, said access to trusted, domain-specific data becomes more important as organizations move from experimenting with AI to deploying it across enterprise operations.

Microsoft Becomes a Distribution Layer for Enterprise Data

The agreement also follows S&P Global’s broader restructuring of Market Intelligence. In July, the company created two operating groups, Kensho Data & Platforms and Enterprise Solutions, to align its data, AI, software and workflow capabilities more closely with customer needs.

The Market Intelligence restructuring placed customer-facing products and AI experiences under Kensho Data & Platforms, while Enterprise Solutions focuses on infrastructure and workflows supporting enterprise customers.

The Microsoft expansion gives that strategy another distribution point. Instead of requiring users to move into a separate S&P Global application to access proprietary intelligence, the company is connecting its licensed data to Microsoft’s existing productivity and AI environment.

That model also fits Microsoft’s broader approach to extending Copilot through external data and specialized capabilities. Microsoft says Cowork plugins can connect the agent to external services and provide domain-specific skills, including financial analysis and other enterprise workflows.

For S&P Global, the immediate focus is on making its proprietary intelligence usable inside AI-assisted research and analysis. The company said the integration is intended to help customers work with data that is contextual, traceable and connected to its original sources while using Microsoft 365 Copilot.
