Elsevier Launches Nora AI For Healthcare Education

Elsevier launched Nora AI, an AI-powered learning assistant that gives healthcare students and educators answers grounded in Elsevier eBooks available through VitalSource's Bookshelf platform.

Elsevier announced Nora AI on 25 August, describing it as a learning assistant designed to help users ask questions, clarify complex topics and build foundational knowledge from healthcare education content.

AI Assistant Works Inside Elsevier eBooks

The assistant is embedded within Elsevier eBooks accessed through VitalSource's Bookshelf platform. Users can ask questions in their own words and receive responses based on the specific eBook they are using, according to Elsevier's announcement.

The company said Nora AI is intended to help students strengthen their understanding of complex concepts without leaving the digital reading environment. Educators can also use the tool to reinforce course materials and support learning outside the classroom.

The launch adds to a broader push to incorporate AI into healthcare education. Elsevier previously introduced Sherpath AI, a generative AI tool for nursing education that provides responses grounded in Elsevier's educational content.

AI-powered training is also being applied elsewhere in healthcare education, including programs designed to expand access to healthcare training.

Nora AI Uses Citations And Related Learning Content

Nora AI provides source citations alongside its responses, as well as follow-up questions and recommendations for related content, Elsevier said. The tool can also connect users with multimedia tutorials, including Osmosis for Healthcare Education videos, and interactive study tools.

Raman Kaur, MSN, AGNP-C, RN-BSN and Vice President of Technology for Global Healthcare Education at Elsevier, said citations and connections to the source material are intended to make the system more transparent and reliable for students and educators.

Elsevier has emphasized similar features across its AI products. Its Osmosis AI product, for example, is designed to provide answers using medical education resources and connect users with related educational material.

The focus on sourcing is particularly relevant as AI tools become more common in healthcare settings. Questions around the reliability and potential bias of medical AI have also drawn attention to the importance of trust and accuracy when applying these systems to healthcare-related information.

Brent Gordon, President of Global Healthcare Education at Elsevier, said Nora AI was intended to give students timely support during learning while providing educators with a resource that complements instruction.

Elsevier said Nora AI was developed as part of its commitment to responsible AI. The company said the tool is designed to keep its responses connected to the healthcare education content being used, rather than presenting them as independent answers.

Nora AI is currently available within Elsevier healthcare education eBooks through VitalSource's Bookshelf platform. The launch positions the assistant as another layer of AI-supported learning within Elsevier's existing digital education products.
