Airbnb's CEO Said Anyone Can Build AI Search

"Anyone can vibe-code a search function."

Airbnb launched AI search on September 30, 2026. CEO Brian Chesky had one explanation for why it took this long: "Anyone can vibe-code a search function, but to do something that doesn't kill conversion rate, that's the hard part."

Users in the US can now toggle into an AI search mode and describe what they are looking for in plain language, text or voice. The interface generates dynamic filters based on the query rather than presenting a fixed set of categories. Searching for "baby" surfaces cribs, playgrounds, and children's toys automatically.

The results include AI-generated descriptions of each property's most relevant features, and saved listings can be compared side by side using AI-powered summaries and review highlights.

"We are finally making our first foray into AI search. And what you see is just the very beginning of something," said Brian Chesky, CEO of Airbnb.

Airbnb processes approximately $100 billion annually through its platform, which means an AI search experience that reduces purchase intent even marginally has a material financial consequence.

Chesky's decision to hold back on AI search until the conversion problem was addressed is the explanation for why Airbnb, a company where AI now writes 60% of new code per a May 2026 disclosure, is only now launching AI-powered property search.

The social features announced alongside AI search extend a capability Airbnb began building in 2025. Users can now view an interactive travel map showing where their connections have stayed and where they are going, tapping any trip to see the specific property booked and which experiences were added.

Home connections booked can be saved directly to a wishlist. Privacy controls let users determine which trips appear in their network and who can see them, according to the company.

The host-facing AI tools arriving later this fall are the most operationally significant disclosure for Airbnb's supply side. A multi-listing calendar allows hosts managing multiple properties to update pricing, availability, cancellation policies, and discounts simultaneously rather than property by property.

Dynamic pricing suggests rates based on real-time supply and demand data, with an explanation for each recommendation rather than producing a number without context.

An AI earnings dashboard will summarize performance and surface suggested actions. Interactive 3D floor plans will give guests a clearer pre-booking understanding of layout, addressing one of the most common causes of booking hesitation for unfamiliar properties.

Airbnb Services continues to expand the post-arrival layer positioning Airbnb as a services platform that extends beyond accommodation in direct competition with the full hotel stay experience.
