What is the Oticon Reveal Dual AI Hearing Aid?

HearingLife has begun offering Oticon Reveal, a new hearing aid that uses two artificial intelligence (AI) systems to process speech and surrounding sounds in real time.

HearingLife announced the availability of the device at its hearing care centers nationwide on August 24. Oticon, part of the Demant Group, introduced Reveal on August 12 and said orders would begin August 24.

Two AI Systems Process Sound

Oticon describes Reveal as the world's first hearing aid powered by a Dual AI system. The company said the system combines dedicated Speech AI and Context AI, which operate continuously and adapt to changing environments.

The Speech AI is designed to provide access to speech, while the Context AI preserves surrounding sounds that can provide additional information about an environment. Oticon said the two systems work together to maintain a balance between speech and contextual sounds rather than focusing only on speech amplification.

The approach builds on Oticon's BrainHearing philosophy, which is based on the idea that the brain uses both speech and contextual sounds to understand its surroundings. The company cited research on how people with hearing loss process sound as part of the technology's development.

The focus addresses a longstanding problem with hearing technology. The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) has noted that people using hearing aids can have difficulty focusing on conversations in noisy environments because devices may amplify speech and background sounds together.

The launch comes as AI is moving into more targeted healthcare applications, including tools designed for specific clinical and patient workflows.

Connectivity And Personalized Listening

Reveal also includes features aimed at making the hearing aid part of a user's everyday digital environment. It supports direct connections with iPhone, iPad and Android devices, along with Bluetooth Low Energy Audio for streaming and access to Auracast broadcast audio. 

The device uses rechargeable batteries and includes Oticon's 4D Sensor technology. Oticon previously introduced the sensor system with Oticon Intent, where it was designed to monitor conversation activity, head and body movement, and the acoustic environment to adapt sound processing to a user's changing listening needs.

Reveal also supports Oticon CROS technology for people with single-sided hearing loss. Oticon said its CROS RE system uses the same Dual AI technology and is compatible with Reveal hardware.

HearingLife said its more than 600 hearing care centers across 42 states will offer the device. The company said its licensed hearing professionals will help patients select hearing technology based on their hearing needs, lifestyle preferences and communication goals.

Oticon's launch places Reveal in a hearing-aid market increasingly focused on AI-driven sound processing and personalization. The company's previous generation, Oticon Intent, used a deep neural network alongside 4D Sensor technology to adapt hearing support to different listening environments.
