How Will Coupa Transformation Change Procurement?

Tonkean provides industrial-grade orchestration and workflows to manage and automate complex operations for Coupa.

Coupa, the cloud-based business spend management (BSM) platform, announced its acquisition of Tonkean, the agentic intake and orchestration platform, on May 21, 2026, in Foster City, California. According to the announcement, this acquisition positions Coupa as the sole provider of fully integrated, Agentic-as-a-Service capabilities. This technology will power automated agentic workflows for Coupa's massive global network, which connects more than 3,500 buyers with 10 million suppliers.

"This is a deliberate, strategic step toward building the #1 agentic trade network and delivering autonomous spend management at speed and scale like no one else in the market," said Salvatore Lombardo, Chief Product and Technology Officer of Coupa.

According to Leagh Turner, the CEO of Coupa, the company seeks to deliver the promise of increasingly autonomous execution of transactions between buyers and suppliers. To achieve this, the three main requirements listed by Turner are industrial-grade and unified orchestration, best-in-class buyer and supplier workflows, and clean, trusted data. Tonkean provides industrial-grade orchestration and workflows to manage and automate complex operations for Coupa.

"With the acquisitions of Rossum and Tonkean, in short order, we have now amassed all the assets to make this promise possible for both buyers and suppliers at a time when buying and selling is getting more complex and costly," said Turner.

Coupa has made three prior strategic acquisitions within a single year: Cirtuo, an AI-native procurement and category strategy software company; Scoutbee, the supplier discovery platform and network; and Rossum, the AI-first intelligent document processing (IDP) platform.

Tonkean’s Tech Boosts Coupa

Founded in 2015 by Sagi Eliyahu and Offir Talmor in Israel, Tonkean is an AI-powered process orchestration platform that enables internal business teams to deliver sophisticated experiences that connect systems, coordinate people, and automate processes. It targets internal business teams like legal, procurement, and HR that want to reduce manual work, increase process adoption and efficiency, and improve the user experience in their organizations.

Salvatore Lombardo, Chief Product and Technology Officer of Coupa, stated, "With Tonkean natively embedded in Coupa, customers get best-in-class orchestration and the best spend platform they already trust, in a single, unified agentic architecture."

For Coupa, Tonkean brings a natural language interface that allows users to submit and track requests with a 2.2x increase in user adoption, along with an advanced framework for multi-agent orchestration and Agent-to-Agent (A2A) coordination. By eliminating manual handoffs, they halve cycle times and save operations teams more than 30 hours weekly. Simultaneously, unified API connections allow suppliers to scale their businesses faster, the company affirmed.

"We couldn't have created a more powerful combination in the market than joining forces with Coupa, unlocking tremendous value to customers far and wide," said Sagi Eliyahu, Tonkean co-founder and CEO.

Coupa has further announced a live walkthrough of the unified Coupa and Tonkean experience on June 4, 2026.
