How is Intel Responding to AI Demand Challenges?

Chipmaker says inference and agentic AI are driving demand for server CPUs, custom silicon, and manufacturing capacity faster than it can expand supply.

Intel's second-quarter fiscal 2026 earnings suggest demand for AI infrastructure continues to outpace manufacturing capacity.

The company reported revenue of $16.1 billion, exceeding guidance by $1.8 billion, while non-GAAP earnings per share reached $0.42 compared with guidance of $0.20. Non-GAAP gross margin came in at 41.8%, roughly 280 basis points above guidance.

Chief Financial Officer David Zinsner said "Collectively, our AI-driven businesses grew greater than 70% year-over-year, including record data center growth, and contributed approximately 70% of revenue," during Intel's July 23 earnings call.

Inference AI Drives CPU Demand

Intel said that enterprise AI is entering a new phase in which inference and agentic workloads are increasing demand for general-purpose server CPUs.

"As AI expands from training to inference and increasingly to agentic and multi-agent systems, general purpose server CPU density continues to increase, and our core server CPU franchise is growing faster than ever," Chief Executive Officer Lip-Bu Tan said.

Intel's Data Center and AI Group generated $6.3 billion in revenue during the quarter, up 24% sequentially and 59% from a year earlier. Zinsner said the result was driven by strong demand across hyperscale and enterprise customers. Intel also introduced Xeon 6+, codenamed Clearwater Forest, its first server-class processor built on the Intel 18A manufacturing process.

Executives said customer demand continues to exceed available supply despite improvements in manufacturing output. Zinsner said Intel expects strong double-digit growth in industry server CPU unit growth this year and next, while Tan described Xeon 6 as one of the fastest-ramping products in the company's history.

Expanding Into AI Infrastructure

Intel also highlighted growing demand for purpose-built silicon designed for specific AI workloads.

Within the Data Center and AI Group, revenue from purpose-built silicon increased roughly 20% sequentially and nearly tripled from a year earlier. The company pointed to its recently announced collaboration with Fortinet on a security processor as one example of that strategy.

Later in the call, Zinsner said Intel's ASIC business is approaching a $2 billion run rate and could reach approximately $4 billion in the not-too-distant future.

Tan said Intel's competitive position comes from combining processor design, manufacturing, advanced packaging, and custom silicon under one company. "We are the only company that can design, manufacture, build the entire range of computing solutions from general purpose, traditional CPUs and GPUs, to more purpose-built ASICs and CPUs optimized for agentic AI," Tan said.

AI in Enterprise PCs and Edge Systems

During the quarter, the company renamed its PC business the Client Computing and Physical AI Group. Tan said the change was made "to recognize the growing opportunity for AI at the edge." Zinsner said AI PC revenue increased 26% sequentially and now represents about two-thirds of client revenue.

Edge deployments account for roughly 10% of the segment's revenue, Zinsner said. Intel recorded 130 Series 3 design wins for edge AI applications, including brain and control deployments for robotics, he added. 

Zinsner also said activations of Intel's vPro management software increased 1,500% over the past four quarters, adding that enterprise customers increasingly view device management and security as essential capabilities for what he described as the "agentic workplace."

Manufacturing Capacity, the Next AI Constraint

Intel's response to rising AI demand is to expand manufacturing capacity.

The company raised its 2026 capital expenditure outlook to more than $20 billion and said spending will increase again in 2027. Zinsner said Intel is accelerating equipment purchases and clean room construction to keep pace with demand, while working to secure supplies of substrates and memory, areas management identified as the primary supply constraints across the industry

Tan also said progress on Intel's next-generation 14A manufacturing process gave the company greater confidence to increase investment. He said customer engagement continues to grow for both Intel's internal products and external foundry business, although he stopped short of identifying new foundry customers when asked by analysts.

Intel's earnings suggest AI infrastructure demand is already reshaping its investment priorities. Executives tied higher capital spending, server CPU growth, advanced packaging expansion, and custom silicon development to sustained demand from hyperscale cloud providers and enterprise customers, while acknowledging that manufacturing capacity remains the company's primary near-term constraint.
