Nokia's AI-RAN Platform Is in Live Trials Across Four Continents

"AI is reshaping the future of telecommunications and creating a significant opportunity for operators to rethink the role of the radio network."

Nokia announced on September 16 that eight operators across four regions are running AI-RAN trials on its platform, extending a footprint that already includes T-Mobile, SoftBank, Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, and NTT DOCOMO into new markets spanning the Middle East, Asia-Pacific, Europe, and North America simultaneously.

Nokia's AI-RAN platform has already delivered more than 20% improvements in spectral efficiency, the measure of how much data a network can transmit over a given frequency band, through AI-powered radio innovations.

software roadmap extending through 2027 and 2028 targets further gains from the same infrastructure without requiring hardware replacements, according to the company.

For operators whose capital expenditure cycles are built around hardware refresh timelines, the ability to extract more capacity from existing spectrum through software upgrades has a direct and quantifiable impact on network economics.

"AI is reshaping the future of telecommunications and creating a significant opportunity for operators to rethink the role of the radio network," said Emma Falck, President of Mobile Infrastructure at Nokia. "The increasing engagement we are seeing from service providers around the world shows that AI-RAN is moving quickly from vision to commercial reality and becoming a foundational technology for the AI-native 6G era."

According to the company, the technical foundation of Nokia's AI-RAN platform is the combination of its AI-native anyRAN software with NVIDIA Aerial RAN Computer, a purpose-built GPU-accelerated platform for radio access network workloads.

The architecture is designed to handle both connectivity and AI workloads on the same infrastructure, enabling operators to run AI applications at the network edge alongside standard telecommunications traffic rather than maintaining separate infrastructure for each.

Operators deploying Nokia's AI-RAN platform for 5G Advanced today are buying infrastructure that can be upgraded to AI-native 6G through software rather than hardware replacement, compressing the capital investment required for the next network generation into a software cost rather than a full infrastructure refresh.

"AI-RAN will transform the mobile network into one of the world's largest distributed AI infrastructures," said Ronnie Vasishta, Senior Vice President of Telecom at NVIDIA. "With NVIDIA Aerial RAN Computer and Nokia's AI-RAN software, operators can build software-defined networks that continuously improve in performance and efficiency, while supporting entirely new AI services at the edge."

The operator list now spans twelve named partners across two generations of trial stage, eight newly announced alongside four previously disclosed, covering markets that represent a significant share of global mobile network investment.

Key Takeaways

  • Nokia's AI-RAN platform is undergoing live trials with eight operators across four continents.
  • Achieve over 20% improvements in spectral efficiency through AI-powered innovations in radio technology.
  • Utilize software upgrades to enhance network capacity without hardware replacements until 2027-2028.
  • Revolutionize network economics by maximizing existing spectrum capabilities for operators facing hardware refresh cycles.
