Novo Nordisk Turns to Anthropic to Accelerate AI-Driven Drug Development

Novo Nordisk will test Anthropic’s Claude Science in R&D workflows as it expands AI use across drug discovery and software development.
Novo Nordisk has entered a collaboration with Anthropic to accelerate drug discovery and development, adding Claude models to the Danish drugmaker’s growing artificial intelligence strategy.
Under the agreement announced September 16, Novo Nordisk and Anthropic will identify challenges in drug discovery, develop solutions for specific scientific workflows and use AI to support biological reasoning. Financial terms were not disclosed.
The companies will initially test Claude Science on selected research and development workflows where they expect the technology to have the greatest impact. Anthropic introduced Claude Science in June as an AI workbench that connects researchers with scientific databases, computational tools and research workflows. The platform supports areas including genomics, proteomics, structural biology and cheminformatics.
Novo Nordisk CEO Mike Doustdar said the partnership would “supercharge our R&D organisation” as the company seeks to expand AI across its research operations. The company also said Anthropic’s models will support software development, allowing it to increase the use of AI across the organization.
Novo Builds a Multi-Model AI Strategy
The Anthropic collaboration follows several other AI initiatives at Novo Nordisk. In April, the company entered a strategic partnership with OpenAI to deploy AI across drug discovery, manufacturing, supply chain, distribution and commercial operations.
Novo Nordisk also established a strategic partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) in August. The agreement includes a co-innovation hub in London where AWS engineers and scientists are working with Novo Nordisk research teams on AI technologies intended to accelerate drug discovery. AWS became Novo Nordisk’s preferred cloud provider and strategic AI partner under the agreement.
The company has described these initiatives as part of its goal to become “the world’s most AI-driven healthcare company.” The Anthropic partnership adds another frontier AI provider to that strategy, with the companies focusing specifically on scientific research as well as software engineering.
Novo Nordisk has already used Claude technology in internal workflows. Anthropic’s case study on the company describes NovoScribe, a generative AI platform developed using Claude Code that supports the production of clinical study documentation. Anthropic reported that the system reduced the time required for some clinical study documentation from more than 10 weeks to 10 minutes. Those figures are based on Anthropic’s account of Novo Nordisk’s deployment.
Pharma Pushes AI Deeper Into R&D
Novo Nordisk’s move comes as pharmaceutical companies expand AI from individual research applications into larger scientific and computing environments. Bristol Myers Squibb, for example, has deployed NVIDIA infrastructure to support larger AI models, biological predictions and research workflows across its organization.
The industry is also facing a test of whether increased AI investment can translate into clinical results. AI has been used extensively in early-stage drug discovery to identify targets, screen compounds and analyze biological data, while many AI-originated drug programs remain in clinical development.
For Novo Nordisk, the Anthropic agreement puts a general-purpose frontier model into specific R&D workflows, with human oversight and data governance built into the collaboration.
