Pacific Life Appoints Bin Mu as Chief Data Officer

"I will be carrying my experiences forward as I help lead Pacific Life into the AI era. Looking forward to the innovation and partnerships ahead."

Pacific Life, a provider of life insurance and retirement solutions, has appointed Bin Mu as its new Chief Data Officer.

Pacific Life manages over $220 billion in assets under management across life insurance, annuities, and retirement solutions.

The company has prioritized AI modernization across core functions including underwriting automation, customer 360 personalization, and real-time fraud detection.

Bin Mu's appointment positions Pacific Life to build enterprise-grade AI capabilities that rival leading fintechs while maintaining compliance in a highly regulated industry.

From Software to Insurance

Mu joins the company after more than four years at Adobe, where he served in two senior data leadership roles, most recently as Chief Data Officer.

At Adobe, Mu was at the center of the company's enterprise AI transformation. He led the modernization of data infrastructure, oversaw the development of data products and AI tools, and established governance frameworks and ethical AI standards across the organization.

He even built an enterprise-wide AI-ready data hub, a foundational investment in Adobe's capacity to operate as an AI-first company.

Prior to his CDO role at Adobe, Mu served as Vice President of Enterprise Data and Analytics, leading a global organization spanning data management, engineering, AI, machine learning, analytics, and governance.

Mu has also held senior data and analytics leadership roles at Brighthouse Financial, MetLife, and Cigna Healthcare. This gives him a depth of experience in regulated, data-intensive industries that aligns closely with Pacific Life's operating environment.

Reflecting on the move, Mu wrote on LinkedIn saying, "The past 4.5 years at Adobe were an incredible ride, thank you Adobe team, you are amazing. I’m carrying those experiences forward as I help lead Pacific Life into the AI era. Looking forward to the innovation and partnerships ahead"

For Pacific Life, the appointment signals a push to deepen its AI and data capabilities at the leadership level. Mu's background, spanning financial services, healthcare, and one of the technology industry's most data-intensive companies, positions him to bring both technical depth and cross-industry perspective to the role.

The hire comes at a moment when financial services firms are under increasing pressure to modernize data infrastructure and operationalize AI across underwriting, customer experience, and risk management functions.

Pacific Life's decision to bring in a CDO with an explicit AI-first track record suggests the company is looking to accelerate rather than simply keep pace with that shift.
