Self-Checkout Just Got Smarter at Morrisons

Self-Checkout Just Got Smarter at Morrisons

"Morrisons recognize that the best AI solutions deliver measurable results without compromising the customer experience."

Morrisons announced on August 6, 2026 that it is rolling out Evercheck, Everseen's AI-powered computer vision system, across 200 stores, becoming the first UK supermarket to deploy the technology at scale.

According to Morrisons, the system uses overhead cameras to compare items placed in a customer's basket with scanned products during self-checkout. If it detects a potential mismatch, it prompts the customer to review or rescan the item before alerting a store colleague.

An overhead camera provides real-time computer vision analysis throughout the self-checkout transaction. When the system identifies a potential missed or mis-scanned item, it does not flag the customer to a member of staff immediately. It shows a video playback of the moment the error occurred and prompts the customer to try again.

The system alerts a store colleague only if the customer is unable to correct the discrepancy after a second attempt. The design puts the customer in the resolution loop before escalating, which is precisely what the research says works.

"Our new partnership with Everseen enables us to provide the fast and seamless checkout experience our customers want, while simultaneously equipping our colleagues to maintain the exceptional service that Morrisons is known for," said Francesca Bezoari, Store Support Office Director at Morrisons.

The timing of the rollout follows the June 2026 publication of the largest ever study of self-checkout loss, conducted by ECR Retail Loss across millions of transactions in 39 retailers.

The study found that stores with self-checkouts experienced losses 33% higher than stores without them. Not all of that is intentional theft. A significant share is accounted for by scanning errors, items that were missed or mis-identified in the process of self-checkout rather than deliberately not scanned.

According to the study, on-screen prompts asking customers to check or rescan items were the most effective intervention for reducing self-checkout shrink.

The study found customers corrected scanning errors in more than 80% of cases after receiving an on-screen prompt.

Everseen said Evercheck was designed around that approach and analyzes checkout transactions rather than individuals. The company said the system does not use facial recognition.

It is currently deployed across more than 150,000 checkouts and 10,000 stores globally, used by 11 of the top 20 global retailers including Kroger, Woolworths Australia, and Meijer.

"Morrisons recognize that the best AI solutions deliver measurable results without compromising the customer experience," said Joe White, CEO of Everseen.

The 200-store rollout covers roughly two-fifths of Morrisons' approximately 500 larger supermarkets. The company has not disclosed which stores will receive the technology first or when the full rollout will be completed.
