Robinhood Just Gave 29 Million Retail Investors an AI Trading Agent

"We're making Robinhood the best place in the world for active traders."

Robinhood launched Robinhood Agents on September 29, opening AI-powered trading agents to all of its approximately 29 million customers at its annual HOOD Summit in Houston.

The launch makes Robinhood the first brokerage to offer nontechnical agentic trading at mass retail scale, giving customers without programming knowledge the ability to configure, instruct, and deploy a trading agent directly inside the app, according to the company.

Customers choose their preferred model from OpenAI's GPT-6 Luna, GPT-6 Sol, or Anthropic's Opus 4.8, and provide instructions in plain English.

Tasks can range from simple executions such as "Buy $200 of Ford stock" to continuous strategies through the Loops feature, which allows an agent to monitor markets and execute trades when defined conditions are met.

The agent operates through a dedicated Robinhood trading account, with user-set limits on how much it can trade at a time and a confirmation process that requires user approval before any transaction is executed, according to the company.

"We're making Robinhood the best place in the world for active traders by delivering tools once reserved for hedge funds, big banks, and quant firms," said Vlad Tenev, CEO of Robinhood.

The launch follows the MCP tool Robinhood released in May 2026, which allowed technically capable users to connect their own agents to its platform.

By late September, those early users had already generated nearly 30 million agent transactions per day across 150,000 agentic accounts, providing Robinhood with production data on agent trading behavior before the mass consumer rollout.

Robinhood has built three specific guardrails into the agent architecture. Each agent operates through a dedicated account separate from a customer's standard Robinhood account.

Customers set explicit trading limits before the agent begins operating. And every proposed transaction requires customer approval before execution, meaning the agent cannot complete a trade autonomously without a human confirmation step.

For a limited period, Robinhood is providing agents with free access to data providers including Unusual Whales and the crypto-focused Token Terminal, giving retail customers access to market intelligence sources that have historically been institutional or professional tools.

The company's view is that hosting agents do not constitute providing financial advice, describing it as equivalent to a customer asking the internet or a friend.

That framing places regulatory responsibility with the customer rather than the broker. The legal landscape around agentic trading is still evolving and no regulatory body has yet issued definitive guidance on where liability falls when an AI agent executes a trade on a retail customer's behalf.

The broader product launch at HOOD Summit also included crypto perpetual futures with up to 10x leverage, extended options trading hours, increased intraday margin, corporate earnings contracts through Cboe, and weekend trading in select US stocks and ETFs through Bruce ATS.
