Amazon Is Deploying AI Glasses to 20,000 Delivery Drivers

"We're focused on using hardware and AI-backed software systems to help DSP owners run stronger operations and improve the delivery experience."

Amazon disclosed two specific AI tools at its Ignite Live conference in Las Vegas on September 21. One has been building a parking and access database since 2024 and the other puts navigation instructions in a driver's line of sight.

Wellspring is Amazon's generative AI mapping tool for last-mile delivery logistics. According to the company, it has identified 202 million parking locations, mapped 2.8 million building entrances, and cataloged 85,000 mailrooms and lockers since 2024.

This is a proprietary dataset that Amazon is extending with AI routing capabilities designed to account for conditions that standard navigation tools do not address specifically.

Those conditions include reduced visibility after sunset and the additional time required to locate parking in dense urban environments, factors that affect delivery speed and driver safety in ways that GPS alone cannot resolve.

Amazon's Smart Delivery Glasses extend the same operational AI logic into wearable hardware. The glasses display navigation suggestions and delivery details in the driver's line of sight, allowing hands to stay free during the final steps of each delivery, according to the company.

New features being rolled out include hands-free scanning and proactive address verification, reducing the time drivers spend checking delivery details on a handheld device at each stop. Amazon expects more than 20,000 Smart Delivery Glasses to be in the field by the end of 2027.

"We're focused on using hardware and AI-backed software systems to help DSP owners run stronger operations and improve the delivery experience," said Beryl Tomay, VP of Transportation at Amazon.

The AI tool deployments sit within a broader safety investment that Amazon quantified at the conference. Serious vehicle crashes across its delivery network dropped more than 23% last year, a result Amazon attributes in part to the more than $543 million it has invested in safety initiatives, programs, and technology for DSP owners since 2022.

Surround-view cameras that identify vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians from multiple directions are being installed in 50% of Rivian electric delivery vehicles by end of 2026, with dynamic hazard alerts and automatic route adjustments also being added to the Amazon Delivery App.

The $1.9 billion 2027 DSP investment brings total program investment to $21.7 billion over eight years, and is expected to push national average pay for Delivery Associates to nearly $24 per hour, up approximately $1 from current levels.

Over the past three years, Amazon said its investments have helped DSP owners increase driver pay by an average of 16% nationwide. Amazon also committed $70 million over five years toward community initiatives led by DSP owners through its Amazon Local Good program.

Key Takeaways

  • Deploy AI glasses to enhance delivery efficiency for 20,000 Amazon drivers.
  • Utilize generative AI for advanced mapping and navigation in urban areas.
  • Address delivery challenges like reduced visibility and parking difficulties.
  • Develop proprietary datasets to improve last-mile delivery logistics.
