Disney's First CTO Will Oversee AI, Data and Engineering Across the Entire Company

Disney's First CTO Will Oversee AI, Data and Engineering Across the Entire Company

"Karandeep brings a rare mix of experience across infrastructure, consumer technology and AI."

A year ago, Disney's lawyers sent Character.AI a cease-and-desist letter demanding it stop using Disney characters without authorization. On September 18, 2026, Disney hired Character.AI's CEO as its first-ever Chief Technology Officer.

Karandeep Anand joins Disney as Senior Executive Vice President and CTO effective October 2, reporting directly to CEO Josh D'Amaro in a role that did not exist before this appointment.

A number of Character.AI's technical team are expected to follow him. The mandate covers enterprise technology, infrastructure, data and AI platforms, product, and engineering across Disney's full business, according to the company.

D'Amaro, who took over as CEO in March 2026 replacing Bob Iger, framed the appointment in terms of the three priorities he has established since taking the role: great storytelling as the North Star, technology in service of creativity, and operating as One Disney.

At Disney's Q3 2026 earnings call in August, he told investors the company is using AI across its studios and the full enterprise, for production pipeline efficiency, film rendering and noise reduction, expanding the number of films available in 3D, and improving Disney+ personalization and recommendation.

He also named data unification as an enterprise-wide priority, describing how large companies built through acquisitions often end up with disparate datasets that do not communicate across business units.

"Karandeep brings a rare mix of experience across infrastructure, consumer technology and AI," D'Amaro said. "He is an expert builder and strategist, technical and product-minded, with sharp instincts for what fans actually want."

In September 2025, Disney sent Character.AI a cease-and-desist letter alleging copyright infringement of characters including Elsa, Moana, Peter Parker, and Darth Vader. Character.AI removed those characters.

The dispute did not prevent Anand from being appointed, and the decision to bring him in alongside members of his technical team signals that Disney's priority in hiring him is his AI platform-building experience rather than his association with the copyright dispute.

Anand led Character.AI through a period of rapid growth, building one of the most engaged consumer AI audiences in the world while making user trust and safety a structural priority as the platform scaled.

Before Character.AI he served as President and Chief Product Officer at Brex, the financial technology company, and as VP of Ads and Business Products at Meta's Facebook. He spent 15 years at Microsoft, where he was involved in building the Azure platform. His academic background is a Computer Science degree from the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad.

The Anand appointment arrived one day after Disney named former YouTube executive Adam Smith chairman of direct-to-consumer for Disney Entertainment, placing him in charge of the global entertainment streaming business with a focus on platform strategy, advertising technology, and emerging tech.

Joe Earley, who was president of direct-to-consumer for Disney Entertainment, moves to a newly created television franchise and content strategy role.
