Netflix Scales Gen AI to 300 Productions, Puts Savings Back Into Content

"We believe it takes great artists to make something great, and AI is not changing that."

Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos used the company's Q2 2026 earnings call on July 16, 2026 to disclose that gen AI is now being used across roughly 300 Netflix titles.

Sarandos described gen AI scaling across the full creative lifecycle, from concept through pre-visualization and post-production to delivery, with the pace of adoption accelerating, according to the report.

Netflix has three AI tools now operating together inside its production ecosystem: InterPositive, an acquisition the company made specifically for this purpose; Eyeline, its internal AI tool; and its animation lab. Sarandos said the tools are "all working together to drive innovation."

The most specific performance data Sarandos cited came from the documentary series American Experiment, which features 17 minutes of AI-enhanced footage. Those 17 minutes were produced twice as fast and at half the cost of what previous production methods would have required.

In many cases, the AI-enabled shots are ones that productions would have simply left out because they could not afford them or could not complete them within their production window. "Those sequences are saved by the availability and access to these gen AI tools," he said.

Sarandos used the call to articulate Netflix's clearest public statement yet on how the company intends to position AI relative to human creative talent, a question that has divided the entertainment industry and been the subject of ongoing labor disputes with writers and actors.

"We believe it takes great artists to make something great, and AI is not changing that," Sarandos said. "AI will give creators better tools to bring their visions to life. Movies are being made by people who make movies. AI provides them with better tools to make them even better."

The current applications he described are consistent with that framing including set references, pre-visualization, VFX, sequence preparation, and shot planning, tools that accelerate and expand what creators can do rather than replacing their decisions. "Those use cases are scaling faster and faster," Sarandos said.

On the commercial question of what happens to the cost savings AI generates in production, Sarandos said they go back into content.

"Content creation timelines can be shortened and quality can be enhanced," he said. "So the cost savings will likely be reinvested into more content on the service, which fuels high-quality engagement and that whole kind of revenue profit flywheel."

Netflix operates with approximately $20 billion in annual cash content spend. Its Q2 2026 revenue came in at $12.56 billion across approximately 330 million subscription households globally.
