Visa, Mastercard and Ant International Just Launched a Trust Layer for AI Agent Payments

"Interoperability across Know-Your-Agent frameworks is essential to making agentic commerce work at scale."
AI agents that complete purchases on your behalf are useful precisely because they act without waiting for your confirmation at every step. That same autonomy is what makes them a trust problem for payment networks.
Ant International, Mastercard, and Visa announced a framework on September 9, 2026 to address that problem at the infrastructure level rather than leaving it to individual platforms to solve independently.
The Know-Your-Agent framework is designed so that an AI agent verified once across the network does not need to be verified again at every point of contact. "If an agent registers with Ant, they don't need to register again with Visa, Mastercard," said Jiang-Ming Yang, Chief Innovation Officer of Ant International.
That single registration, covering identity, behavioral requirements, and ongoing monitoring, is the commercial efficiency the framework creates for agent platforms, marketplaces, and payment processors simultaneously.
Visa, Mastercard, and Ant International have each already built their own agent trust protocols. The gap is not individual capability, it is interoperability across the systems that different consumers and merchants use.
A consumer whose AI agent operates through Alipay+ needs that agent to be trusted by Visa-accepting merchants and Mastercard-processing banks without requiring a separate verification journey at each point.
According to the press release, the KYA framework rests on three specific requirements. Cross-network operator traceability links each agent to a validated operator, cardholder, or business, establishing clear attribution for every agent action.
Shared certification requirements assess each agent against security and behavioral standards before it is permitted to transact. Continuous transaction monitoring evaluates each agent using identity and transaction signals on an ongoing basis rather than treating certification as a one-time gate.
The framework will be developed through BuildFin.ai, an industry platform convened by the Monetary Authority of Singapore, giving it regulatory grounding in one of the world's most developed AI financial governance frameworks.
The MAS backing also positions the initiative as an Asia-Pacific infrastructure effort rather than a bilateral commercial arrangement between three companies.
Digital wallets accounted for 56% of global e-commerce value in 2025, more than $13 trillion in spending per Worldpay, and Ant International's Alipay+ system connects more than 50 e-wallet partners across markets where digital wallets are the primary payment method rather than physical cards.
A KYA framework that spans both card networks and wallet ecosystems addresses the full commercial surface on which agentic commerce will operate.
"Interoperability across Know-Your-Agent frameworks is essential to making agentic commerce work at scale," said Pablo Fourez, Chief Digital Officer at Mastercard.
