What is the Cognex In-Sight 3900 Vision System?

"We have built a system that delivers both, with the reliability and simplicity Cognex is known for."

Cognex announced the In-Sight 3900 Vision System on May 5, 2026, its highest-performance embedded AI vision system to date, powered by Qualcomm Dragonwing platforms and designed to run demanding factory inspections at full production speed without requiring an external PC.

The announcement follows last week's In-Sight 6900 launch, which focused on NVIDIA-powered compute density and few-shot learning. The 3900 addresses a different constraint: raw throughput.

The system inspects up to 5,000 parts per minute, processes inspections up to 4X faster than previous-generation Cognex vision systems, and supports image resolutions up to 25 megapixels

According to the press release, this will enable manufacturers to run high-resolution inspections across wider fields of view without slowing production lines.

"Manufacturers no longer have to choose between inspection depth and line speed," said Matt Moschner, President and CEO of Cognex. "We have built a system that delivers both, with the reliability and simplicity Cognex is known for."

What the Hardware Delivers

The In-Sight 3900 is built on a dedicated high-performance AI processor, part of a new generation of Cognex embedded AI architecture, that enables deterministic, real-time inspection synchronized to high-speed production lines.

It supports three layers of capability: Edge AI tools for fast deployment and inspection stability, Advanced AI tools for complex high-variability applications, and rule-based vision tools for established inspection workflows.

According to the press release, PC-free operation is a deliberate design decision. Removing the external computer simplifies validation, deployment, and lifecycle management, reducing the infrastructure overhead that has historically slowed AI vision deployment in manufacturing environments.

Dual Ethernet architecture ensures reliable communication with PLCs, robots, and enterprise systems. Fuji Seal, a packaging manufacturer whose lines operate at extremely high speeds, provided the most concrete proof of what the system enables.

"The In-Sight 3900 now allows us to deploy Cognex's Edge AI Read tools at full production speed without compromising throughput," said Andrea Sabbadini, Engineering Manager at Fuji Seal. "The result is a more robust inspection process that's faster to set up and easier to maintain across our lines." Previously, line speed had limited the company to traditional OCR tools rather than AI-powered inspection.

The Qualcomm Partnership and Ecosystem Context

The In-Sight 3900 is powered by Qualcomm Dragonwing platforms, specialized silicon designed for demanding edge AI workloads in industrial environments.

"Cognex has pushed the boundaries of what embedded AI vision can deliver at the edge," said Shyam Krishnamurthy, Senior Vice President at Qualcomm. "We are proud to power this breakthrough with Qualcomm technology."

The system integrates with OneVision, Cognex's cloud-to-edge AI vision platform, which allows engineering teams to train AI models centrally and deploy them locally across multiple devices and production sites.

That combination addresses one of the most persistent challenges in scaling AI inspection across multi-site manufacturing operations: maintaining consistent inspection quality across lines and facilities without rebuilding models at each location.

The In-Sight 3900 targets next-generation packaging, automotive, electronics, and consumer goods applications where high-speed, high-accuracy inspection is a baseline requirement.
