Albertsons Embedded Safeway Into ChatGPT So Shoppers Never Have to Leave the Chat

"We are on a mission to power our customers at every touchpoint with AI to deliver a seamless shopping experience."
Albertsons Companies announced on August 5, 2026 that Safeway shoppers can now conduct their grocery shopping inside ChatGPT, finding products, building a cart, and planning meals through natural language conversation before checking out on the Safeway platform.
The announcement makes Albertsons one of the first major US grocery chains to embed a shopping experience directly inside a third-party AI assistant rather than building a standalone tool customers must seek out, according to the press release.
Shoppers find the Safeway plugin in the ChatGPT sidebar, activate it, and type "@Safeway" into any conversation to surface the plugin automatically.
From there, they can describe what they need in plain language, and the plugin returns relevant Safeway products. Cart review and modification happen inside ChatGPT. Checkout happens on Safeway's own platform.
"We are on a mission to power our customers at every touchpoint with AI to deliver a seamless shopping experience that's faster, easier and more enjoyable," said Jill Pavlovich, SVP of Digital Customer Experience at Albertsons Companies. "By enabling our plugin in ChatGPT, we are making grocery shopping as simple as having a conversation by meeting our customers when and how they choose to shop."
In May 2026, Albertsons launched an AI produce quality inspection tool built on computer vision and Google's Gemini models, deployed across its 22 distribution centers and 2,244 stores to standardize produce grading decisions that had previously varied by inspector, shift, and warehouse.
The two launches together describe a company deploying AI across opposite ends of its operation simultaneously: customer discovery at the front and supply chain consistency at the back.
The Safeway plugin also sits within the broader agentic commerce pattern documented across the grocery sector this year. Kroger launched an AI Shopping Assistant on July 28 with recipe-to-cart capability.
Morrisons deployed Instacart's Caper smart trolleys on July 28. Michaels launched Ask Mike in May. Albertsons is now inserting itself into the commerce layer where an increasing share of grocery research already begins, rather than asking them to open a separate app.
