Kroger's AI Shopping Assistant Turns Any Recipe Into a Cart in Seconds

"We continue to invest in digital tools that make shopping simpler, more intuitive and more convenient for our customers."
Kroger announced on July 28, 2026 the launch of its AI Shopping Assistant, a digital tool now live across the Kroger Family of Companies websites and apps that is designed to replace the manual search-and-add process of online grocery shopping with a conversational planning interface.
The AI Shopping Assistant can scan handwritten grocery lists and recipe cards using a photo, identify the products, and generate a shopping cart in seconds, according to Kroger.
The same works for recipe URLs: paste a link and the assistant pulls the ingredient list and creates a cart automatically. For a grocery category where the gap between what someone wants to cook and what ends up in the cart has historically required significant manual effort, this is the most concrete time-saving claim in the announcement.
"We continue to invest in digital tools that make shopping simpler, more intuitive and more convenient for our customers," said Yael Cosset, EVP and Chief Digital Officer at Kroger. "The AI Shopping Assistant is another example of how we're using technology and AI to help families plan, discover and shop more easily."
The AI Shopping Assistant operates across three distinct planning modes. Meal planning allows customers to describe what they want to cook for the week, set dietary preferences and budget parameters, and receive recipe suggestions alongside a cart built around those constraints.
Kroger said the assistant recommends products based on the selected recipes and preferences, reducing the number of items customers need to search for individually.
Occasion planning extends the same logic to specific events. A customer planning a tailgate or a birthday party can describe the occasion and receive a tailored shopping list with product suggestions calibrated to that context rather than generic weekly staples.
The third mode is the image and URL scanning capability, the most novel of the three and the one most likely to change existing behavior rather than replicate a digital version of something customers already do manually.
The AI Shopping Assistant is available across Kroger's websites and apps, with the same product assortment accessible through the app, Kroger.com, and on-demand through DoorDash, Instacart, and Uber Eats. No adoption metrics or usage figures were disclosed at launch.
