State Street Names Christopher Herringshaw as Global CTO With a Mandate That Puts AI at the Center

"This firm quietly underpins the global financial system, at a scale most people never fully appreciate."

State Street announced Christopher Herringshaw as its new Executive Vice President and Global Chief Technology Officer on July 31. The company said he will lead its technology organization, with responsibility for AI adoption, platform modernization, data infrastructure, cloud, and engineering.

Herringshaw's mandate as confirmed by State Street spans infrastructure, architecture, cloud, artificial intelligence, and application development, making him the single accountable executive for the full technology stack at one of the world's largest custodian banks.

State Street announced the appointment on its official channels, while Herringshaw also shared the news in a LinkedIn post outlining his reasons for joining the company.

In his LinkedIn post, Herringshaw said the scale of State Street's business was one of the factors that attracted him to the role.

State Street operates at the intersection of custody, fund servicing, data, investment management, and global markets, functions that collectively underpin the operational infrastructure of global capital markets in ways that are largely invisible to anyone outside the industry.

"This firm quietly underpins the global financial system," Herringshaw wrote, "at a scale most people never fully appreciate."

The second factor is the technology agenda itself. Herringshaw was explicit that what drew him was not a strategy document but an execution already in motion.

"AI adoption at regulated scale. Platform modernization at a size few firms ever attempt. Data infrastructure as a genuine strategic asset," he wrote. "These aren't aspirations on a PowerPoint slide, they're the future of State Street and we have serious momentum."

Herringshaw also highlighted the existing team, and said he was "genuinely energized by the talent in this organization."

State Street's technology organization is among the largest in financial services, the firm manages trillions in assets under custody and serves institutional investors, asset managers, and sovereign wealth funds globally.
